I'll agree it is rare Cap'n but I think it not an unlearnable process or unlearnable attitude. You mention the" severe lack of respect" and though not epidemic it is present. On both sides. Whether it is fear or blame it makes no difference. Once the walls go up the accusations fly and the necessary steps are thrown aside in panic. My experience has been that the crew is far more sensative to the situation than what most producers are aware of or care to let themselves recognize. On the other hand I have seen crew giving management honest solutions but in the most hurtful and upsetting way. The lack of respect you mention can be destructive from both sides and as artists we have no more excuse than they do for that insensativity. Two productions with similar problems can go totally different directions with the only difference being leadership or a crew that makes thew effort not to just blame . The goal for both is exactly the same yet sometimes neither can be forgiving.
I think as an artist it is up to us to be just as aware of the effect we are having on all those around us as we expect them to be of our mood. Myself I feel anger is not enough to sustain a long term change because drags personality into the relationship in the most negative way. If that is true then the only answer is cool headed planning and finding production models that do work (and using them). I believe we need good producers because all I want is to be able to do my job in the way that gets the best results. That is all. Not run the film. Not bully others or vent my years of frustration.
And last since this site is based on management models that are destructive and need to be reworked than possibly what we should be discussing the ones that seem to have avoided the clash and how they did it as well as the ones that failed.
I understand that Disney has now adopted a heavy handed management that demands things that are unrealistic . Bad enough that artists must reapply for every film, be evaluated yearly, but can only submit ten scenes, in rough and only from the last film they worked on. My only real problem with this is that the crew never gets to evaluate the management they were under at all. If the management is the problem then the crew takes the brunt no matter what. Since management is chosen by people above them it would give the crew at least a voice in what could be a inneffective management. If the goal (as claimed) is to get the most effective in all areas than they should be open to that. The ability to work with a crew is just as important as it is to work within one. Just a thought. Just rambling.
