: Just curious. I've heard good and bad things--surprisingly, mostly good:

Saw it. Had my doubts going in, but was very pleasantly surprised. And I didn't hear any really negative comments (which was a huge change from earlier screenings).

:Animation top notch, layouts and background paintings top notch,

Without a doubt. Beautiful stuff.

:Character design, top notch.

Some people won't be so thrilled here, I suspect, but it did all seem "of a piece" (unlike many recent Disney efforts).

The songs were actually O.K. They didn't feel intrusive, as I'd feared.

:and overall story, better than expected, but not the breakthrough JK was hoping for??

I've never heard anyone, especially Jeffrey, suggest that El Dorado was going for breakthroughs in the story. The story was much, much tighter than earlier versions, but it's as conventional as just about all recent animated features. The biggest changes I saw were that it had been made safe for kiddies (the really sexy and violent stuff taken out). That was disappointing to me as an adult, but I know it will do much better as a result with the public.

:I didn't see it, but am anxious to, and hope it's a hit (for the business). The one common comment made was that Jeff's speech before the screening was tiresome and weary.

His speech was virtually the same speech that's given before all these films, at whatever studio. "You guys are the best crew ever . . . no one thought we'd ever finish . . . you proved the doubters wrong . . . let's have the department heads stand up . . . blah, blah, blah."
