In Reply to: wondering about the future market.... posted by chad on February 21, 2000 at 15:51:08:
: my name is chad and i'll be attending the University of Illinios in Champaign in the fall.
: My field of interest is animation(3d).
: After reading many of the posts, i have a few questions...
: 1. What is the average salary for an animator?
It can vary. Journeyman animators get about $1200 a week in LA. Some make more, some a little less. Starting salaries can vary too. Anywhere from about $500 a week to $750 or $800. The average salary is probably between $1100 and $1800 a week.
: 2. What is the high side of the salaries?
The high side, according to the union's last survey was about $2800 a week for cgi animators.
: 3. Is there a lot of oppurtunity to move up the chain?
If you keep improving your skills and develop as an artist, you can move up the chain but much depends on other things such as the amount of work that's going on, studio politics, things like that. Best thing is to do a good job and keep inmproving.
: 4. How do the contracts work. Do you sign for a few years and then hopefully you get renewed.
Work for hire most of the time. Contracts usually lock you in for a year or so or the length of the production. They're renewed depending upon whether or not the studio has more work, how you've preformed, budgets, so on.
: I know that 3d Animation is going to be very big 4-5 years from know, and i'm just curious if the market will be in high demand for animators.
It's big now and it's growing. Who can say what will be happening in 4 or 5 years. Good animators in cgi are always needed. study traditional art and animation basics. It will help you.
: thank you very much for your time,
