: Lets see. Iron Giant was voted 3d best film of the year by the La Critics. It swept the Annies. Not bad for an unpromoted low budget feature. Boxoffice isn't everything.
See, the thing is, we in the animation biz are very proud to see what Bird was able to get done. It ended up being a labor of love. It won all kinds of awards - great.
But money IS the bottom line, by definition. An interesting note: while I was there in LA (coming back in mid-January, by the way), I met with a Disney guy I happened to know. He asked if I had seen Iron Giant, I said I had, and he asked me what I thought. Now this guy is a Disney-right-or-wrong kind of guy, so I was quite happy to tell him I thought it was one of the best animated films ever made. He agreed wholeheartedly, and then said, "If Disney had had that property, that film, it would have made a SQUILLION dollars." He was flabberghasted at WB's ability to let that thing fizzle.
I thought that was an interesting comment. Unfortunately, WB execs have been consoling themselves by reciting formulas: "Disney is the only company that knows how to make a successful feature film."
Yeah, that's because animation has always been primary to them. Not a corporate hobby.
