To bring everyone up to date on the subject, Charles Solomon wrote an excellent article published in the Calendar section of the LA Times last Friday, the 27th. In it, he described in detail how Warners blew it with the marketing of IG, the nature of which became very clear as one read on. What I found to be so amazing is virtually all routine marketing protocal associated with this kind of entertainment product was never utilized.
Which makes me wonder.
The marketing of this movie was so poor, I tend to suspect that it may have been deliberate. Nobody who calls themselves professional could have possibley have done so bad as the Warner's marketing team, especially since they were so heavy into the marketing of a piece of shlock like "The Wild, Wild West". I suspect that there may have been a deliberate attempt to sabotage the film. Maybe it had something to do with Brad Bird's production autonomy. Maybe it's for other reasons. Maybe not. Maybe they really are that stupid, but after reading the article I became increasingly suspicious.
