Oh, poor little marketing executives. Boo hoo hoo.
With a "significant advertsing budget" and a masterpiece on your hands, you still couldn't swing it? Ever think of talking your strategy over with the film's director beforehand? Ever think of asking some of your key animation artists for suggestions? Ever think of approaching a publisher with the idea of printing a book called "The Art of The Iron Giant"? Ever think of making sure that Warner retail outlets had tee shirts and toys in time for the movie's premier? Ever think of coordinating a premium campaign in conjunction with a major fast food chain? Ever think of developing a tv series based on the film? You've got your own network, for God's sake.
The problem with "toon marketing"? Oh, yeah. Just look at "Pokemon". Big problem there.
The only problem animation has, whether it's in production, distribution, advertising or marketing, comes from the executive braniacs at the top who think they know this business and this medium and who systematically disenfranchise those who make their positions possible.
All they have to do is get their heads out from their colons and listen to what it is that we have to say. It could save them a lot of embarassment, save a lot of jobs and keep the industry healthy and growing, but noooooo...
Hey! How many marketing layoffs at Warners as a result of this? Anybody know? Care to venture a guess?
We are the future of our own industry, not the executive breed and their sorry excuses.
