Things are about to change in a big way.
Last week on the ABC Evening News, I happened to catch a segment on the new digital era that entertainment is entering into. The item featured the digital technology that the motion picture industry will be using in the very near future. Digital cameras, digital distribution, digital projectors and companies preparing to exhibit first run movies on the Internet.
Also in the news last week, Apple Computers unveiled the G4, what they termed the world's first desktop supercomputer. They also unveiled a new 22 inch flat panel monitor which they call the Apple Cinema Display.
Industry is getting ready for a new media in motion picture entertainment. This new technolgy combined with a very favorable environment for independent projects means that new opportunities will be presenting themselves for those who aspire to do something in animation outside of the traditional studio system.
If you or someone you know think that nothing in animation is going to change, the climate is right for a dramatic shift in this business. It's not in the hands of the traditional power brokers as it once was. The technology behind digital cinema, at least in theory, means that many more people who are driven to create and compete independently will have more of an opportunity to do so as time goes on.
The destiny of animation will increasingly be affected by pioneers and visionaries who are motivated enough to position themselves for the new media and the future.
Keep the faith.
