So happy to hear this. Sounds like it really WAS in-house political BS, including ample amounts of total stupidity thrown in for good measure.
But the story I heard today was that, yes, WB dilly-dallied for over a year in lining up proper promotional arrangements, believing (for better or worse) that there was NO WAY a WB feature could succeed. During the second year of production, word began to trickle down (or up) to the suits: this was a damned good movie. They KNEW they weren't prepared to properly exploit a good film, and so they tried to delay the release. The director, however, in typical artistic fashion, was anxious that people see his beautiful work ASAP, and insisted that it be released upon finish. Apparently in retrospect he has admitted it might have been better to delay the release.
None of this excuses WB execs who would either green-light THAT kind of money on a loser project (as one option), or fail to get behind their own excellent film (as the truth has revealed itself).
We should be encouraged at this news if it is true.
