What better way to launch 2014 on AnimationNation than to feature an animated video about... eating bugs? "Should We Eat Bugs" is the topic of this short produced for the Ted-Ed series on YouTube. It's animated by Neighbor in beautiful downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota in the US. Neighbor is a collective of talents in a multi creative platform of applications of their work. Animators, illustrators, motion graphics artists and storytellers.

Synfig Studio is free and open-source 2D animation software, designed as a powerful industrial-strength solution for creating film-quality animation using vector and bitmap artwork. It eliminates the need to create animation frame-by frame, allowing you to produce 2D animation of a higher quality with fewer people and resources.

Synfig Studio is available for Windows, Linux and MacOS X.

'Cycle' - Amir Porat & Mor Israeli

This animated short was created for the Israeli contest Maratoon 2013. It was produced by Amir Porat and Mor Israeli. Participants were given five days to create a one minute animated film on a specific subject. This year the subject for the Maratoon Contest was bicycle and "Cycle" won second place.

By choosing to work on repetitive cycles for Cycle, the filmmakers were able to achieve a high production value within a very short time schedule while also establishing a narrative aspect for the project.

'Damned' - Richard Phelan

You'll love this short film by Richard Phelan and his talented crew and associates. He's an artist with Aardman Studios in the UK. This video was created as his graduation film at the National Film and Television School in the London area. "Damned" concerns ambitious vanity, environmental degradation and redemption all in a uniquely designed traditionally animated bundle. Now that it's had its film festival run where an assortment of awards were won, it's available to view online...
