Sharing more great animation from around the world. Here's a student film that's recently completed its run of many prestigious film festivals. It's called or "El Vendedor de Humo" or "The Smoke Seller". It comes from Primer Frame School of Animation in Valencia, Spain and is a fine example of the quality of Spanish animation. There's a long list crediting the many talented individuals who worked on it with Jaime Maestro Sellés at the helm as director.

This student film was produced as a graduate project in 2011 by Simon Cottee at the Queensland College of Art at Griffith University in Australia. It's won several major festival awards during its run down under and is now available for all to see online. The story involves a young man who's attending the wedding of his estranged father and the thoughts and feelings he experiences. Additional credits include story by Jack Vening and sound fx by Dan Brumm.

It has 6,327,709 views is just 3 days since January 29 as of this writing rivaling the exposure it would get if it was broadcast on television in the US and probably exceeding it. The Oscar nominated short is a beautiful work. Now it's online and everyone can enjoy it. Kudos to first time director John Kahrs for a great artistic accomplishment. Hello friends and brothers and sisters in our art form and community!

Since its inception and launch in February 1999 the AnimationNation Movement has been at the core of industry reform. There are many problems within animation especially when it comes to the interests of artists. Most individuals, groups, organizations and websites involved in our industry ignore this or gloss over things or attempt to trivialize or discredit these issues and thus become part of the dysfunction. One of the more chronic challenges we face is the epidemic of free work. The willingness of artists to do free work in exchange for credit or what have you. Anything but money. Especially for artists coming out of school or looking to make a transition from one work environment to another.

My long time friend, associate, brother in arms and character design legend Stephen Silver has just launched a campaign to do something about this and we at AnimationNation are wholeheartedly backing the effort. Take a look at his latest YouTube video and listen to what he has to say. It's vitally important to us all. Embrace the challenge and help to get the message out.
