If you're a fan of TCM ( Turner Classic Movies) which in my opinion is the best cable channel on American TV, you're aware of the TCM Classic Film Festival which takes place in Hollywood this time of year. This is the third time it's being held to the great delight of classic movie fans.

This Saturday, April 14 at 1:00PM at Grauman's Chinese Theatre on Holywood Boulevard, Walt Disney's timeless 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will screen' at the very place where it debuted in 1937.

How often does this happen? Not very to say the least.

Moviegoers in the LA area will have that opportunity this weekend.

.............

Seventy-five years ago Walt Disney brought the U.S. a new kind of film, the animated feature, when he defied industry insiders, including his own brother, to release this timeless classic. Although most of Hollywood dubbed the film "Disney's Folly," it earned a standing ovation from many of its detractors at its premiere and went on to supplant The Jazz Singer (1927) as the top-grossing sound film to that time (a record beaten in 1939 by Gone With the Wind). Disney started working on the film in 1934, hoping to improve on the revenues from his animated shorts. He chose the Snow White story because of the opportunities the dwarfs offered for humor, and wisely insisted on giving each his own name and personality (they are unnamed in earlier versions of the story). To maximize the effectiveness of the film's visual storytelling, Disney had his artists see a wide variety of films, from MGM's 1936 Romeo and Juliet to such German expressionist classics as Nosferatu (1922). The resulting film revolutionized the industry and brought in enough money to build the Disney Studios in Burbank.

The practice of re-releasing Snow White every seven years was employed by Walt early on.

Seven years after in 1944, there was a new theatrical trailer for Snow White. Here it is...

There doesn't seem to be activity in the 1960s or 70s, but by 1987 on the 50th anniversary of the film, Snow White was released in theaters worldwide. Here's Disney's trailer from that time.
