I discovered this video via a blog maintained by Sachin Kumar Mohanty and am embedding it for educational purposes here on the Forums.

This is a short documentary on Vimeo which does a good job describing the history of computer generated characters in motion pictures.

A very nice review of the milestones in CG characters, especially for the photo-real effects characters.
