I'm especially happy to announce our guest for this coming AN Night in Burbank on Tuesday evening, August 30.

Sherm Cohen is a cartoonist, writer and storyboard artist. He got his start in animation at Nickelodeon on The Ren and Stimpy Show as a character layout artist, followed by a three-year stint on Hey Arnold as storyboard artist and director.

In early 1998, Sherm was invited by SpongeBob's creator Steve Hillenburg to be part of the original SpongeBob SquarePants crew. Sherm spent the first season on the show as a writer, storyboard artist and director, then moved up to Storyboard Supervisor for the next three seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants. Sherm was also Character Designer and Lead Storyboard Artist on The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.

Sherm has also storyboarded at Cartoon Network Studios and just completed two seasons of writing and drawing storyboards for Phineas and Ferb at Walt Disney Studios. Sherm is currently working as Storyboard Supervisor on Fish Hooks, where he also appears on-screen every episode as Bud the pet-shop owner.

Sherm has created a number of instructional videos on cartooning, storyboarding and digital art techniques. "Storyboard Secrets," his instructional 10-DVD course on storyboarding, has been used to teach storyboarding worldwide, including at The School of Visual Arts. Sherm's newest book on how to draw cartoons, "Cartooning: Character Design" is published by Walter Foster Publishing and has been used in the curriculum at CalArts.

In 2011 Sherm received an Emmy nomination for his work as director on Disney's Kick Buttowski.

His DVD course website is: http://StoryboardSecrets.com

And his storyboarding tutorials blog is at: http://StoryboardTips.com

This is going to be a great evening of fun, education and creative inspiration!

Among our visitors last night were Chris and Christine Kezelos, the director and producer of the highly acclaimed stop motion animated film 'Zero'. We screened it last night after Sherm Cohen.

They'll be returning on November 29, 2011 for an exclusive screening of their next film "The Maker".

We'll also have with us the Gaming Animation Effects Club (GAX) from Santa Monica City College who'll be screening their short films as well.

Penny Jones writes for the Examiner.com and is a regular at AN Nights. Here's her article for this month on the way to being published...

........

Animation Nation Night Features Storyboard Artist from Sponge Bob Square Pants!

The upper floor of the Burbank’s Renters Association was jam packed like sardines in a can with animation professionals, children, students and fans, to hear Storyboard Artist, Sherm Cohen. Animation Nation Night is hosted by The Animation Academy in Burbank, on the last Tuesday of every month. Shem Cohen worked as a Storyboard Artist on such shows as Sponge Bob Square Pants, My Gym Partners a Monkey, Phineas and Ferb and Fish Hooks.

Sherm Cohen said that after graduating from school, he knew he wanted to be an artist, only that he didn’t know yet what type of artist. He then went to Pierce College, where he worked on comics for the school newspaper. Later, after college, it was when he met Bill Ray, Director of the Ren and Stimpy Show that Sherm realized that he wanted to go into storyboarding. Under Bill Ray’s tutoring, Sherm work and reworked storyboards in an effort to one day get into the field. Sherm Cohen gave some good advice to animation students.

His five steps to success were:

1) Make stuff
2) Show it around
3) Ask for the sale (job inquiry)
4) Make better stuff
5) Repeat

Sherm also said that if you want to work in storyboarding, than make storyboards; or if you want to be a comic book artist, and then make your own comic book. While that seems pretty elementary, Sherm explained that he would see a lot of portfolios of artists saying that they wanted to work in storyboarding, but their portfolios didn’t have any storyboard samples. Sherm explained that you need to be proactive in your career.

Here's some photos from last AN Night with Sherm Cohen.

Sherm gave a fantastic lecture and presentation that greatly benefited everyone in attendance.

This is a shot of part of the crowd that showed up. It was still fairly early and we continued to have people coming in while Sherm was lecturing and even later when we had a screening of Chris and Christine Kezelos' film "Zero".

Here's Sherm Cohen interacting with fans after he wrapped up his presentation. They're reviewing sample storyboards he brought along plus his Storyboard Secrets DVD package and some books he's published.

Thank you Sherm! You made it a great AN Night.
