Perhaps the very first use of stop motion animation

Another fine example of why I love YouTube and what it brings to the Internet. Check out what I discovered. It's a short film produced by Thomas Edison's movie company. Something I had no idea existed.

It's the original "Frankenstein" from 1910. That's makes it a 100 year old movie! I had no idea this even existed. It's 12 minutes 42 seconds long, and is remarkable for having what could very well be the first use of stop motion animation. It's in the scene where the monster is being created, about 3 minutes into the film.

Amazing for two reasons--

1.) For what might be an initial attempt, the result appears to be pretty sophisticated.

2.) Even in the silent era, filmmakers were unafraid of being experimental.

I think it's actually film ran in reverse of the puppet being burned away. The smoke is going down instead of up, and the black background can be used to hide what is controlling the puppet.

Still though, very impressive. People were probably freaked out to see that.
