Help with Cel Identification (Web Woman, Masters of the Univ

Postby ryanclayto » Mon Jul 29, 2013 1:52 pm

Hi Guys,

This is my first time posting here. My name is Ryan Claytor. I'm a professor at Michigan State University and I also write and illustrate a series of autobio comics. (Here if you're interested.)-> http://www.elephanteater.com/

I am writing because I'm hoping to get some help identifying a couple of animation cels I recently purchased. Here's the first one:

Image

I was told by the seller that it's from an essoteric series called, "Web Woman" that only ran for one season before getting cancelled, due to it being a bit close to infringing on Spider-Woman copyrights. I'm curious if anyone knows what episode it might be from. I have never seen the cartoon before, but evidently it was featured on the 1978–1980 television series "Tarzan and the Super 7" by Filmation. From what I can gather there were only 10 episodes total:

"The Rainmaker"
"The Eye of the Fly"
"The World Within"
"Madame Macabre's Calamity Circus"
"Red Snails at Sunset"
"Send in the Clones"
"The Sun Thief"
"Dr. Despair and the Mood Machine"
"The Perfect Crime"
"The Lady in the Lamp"

Can anyone tell me:

1) What episode is this from?
2) What year did it air?
3) How might I be able to watch these old episodes?

----------------------------------

Next we have something a little more well-known, a cel from "Masters of the Universe":

Again, for this one I'm curious if anyone can tell me the episode and year it aired.

Thanks in advance for any help you can spare.

Sincerely,
Ryan Claytor

Hi Ryan.

I don't know about the first series you mentioned but the cel from He-Man is, according to the notation on the art, episode 105 of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

The episode is entitled "No Job Too Small" from the second season of the series and was aired on November 3, 1984.

Hi Charles,

Thanks so much for your reply. That code (MU-105) makes a lot of sense now, and the link to the episode descriptions was very helpful.

I watched through episode 105 and could not find the pictured cel. So I went back to look at my cel and it says, "MU-50" on the RIGHT side. Here's a link to the image, as the right side seems to have been cut off in this thread:

http://www.elephanteater.com/wp-content ... iverse.jpg

So, the BACKGROUND is definitely from MU-50 (Masters of the Universe - Episode 50 "Temple of the Sun" http://www.hulu.com/watch/225511 ), but the He-man and Orco portion of the cel are not! Those are the images with the MU 105 listing on them, but, they weren't anywhere in the episode 105 - "No Job Too Small" ( http://www.hulu.com/watch/259589 ). There was, however, a similar portion of the episode where He-Man's alter-ego does interact with a rope, but never He-Man. Is it possible the scene got cut? Any information you can give would be helpful.

Thanks again, Charles, and anyone else willing to chime-in.

Sincerely,
Ryan Claytor

I don't know why this is Ryan. Part of the notation on the cell looks like it was numbered as a stock scene. They were animation available for repeated use and helped cut down on production time. Maybe it was part of the stock footage system that was intended to be in the episode but taken out. It's the best guess I can come up with.

I worked on the series by the way so their production methods are familiar to me including the stock footage system.
