Hi, Ive just started my company http://www.eyeformedia.co.uk
I provide 2d animation, Graphic Design, illustration and im in the process of learning videography for music videos, events etc.
I would just like to start some dialogue on how some of you guys make money from what you love to do if you are self employed/freelance.
Some of the problems I'm having is getting traffic to my site and generally getting people to know about what I'm doing and what I have to offer.
Im experienced in animation, but the business side of things is where I am struggling.
Welcome to AN Dwayne!
In answer to your question, we're all trying to figure it out as much as we can in a changing animation world. Best thing I can recommend at this point in your career is to look for ways to improve upon the quality for your work. The more proficient you become in your art the more people will be attracted to what you do.
Some of the paths you might take...
Commercial animation. From the testimonials on your site you seem to have some happy clients. If you enjoy working in this area of the art and are getting experience keep it up. There's always someone looking for a quality content for advertising.
Speaking of content, many are having positive results from creating original properties for the Web. A great way to develop a following especially if you can keep it going over time. Which leads to...
Crowdfunding. The most significant new area for making money with your work. Also...
Employment at a studio if it works out that way for you. Good for meeting people and building relationships plus the steady paycheck is appealing.
There's also downloadable content you can produce such as ebooks, merchandise like t-shirts and such, etc. Comes in handy as rewards for your crowdfunding campaigns.
Utilize social media, stay active in getting your work seen by your community and most importantly strive to constantly improve upon the quality of your work. What you're doing is a life long experience.
Good luck and keep us updated with what's happening with your art.
