Amanda Palmer - The Art of Asking - More Kickstarter $ucce$$

Listen to this presentation by Amanda Palmer. She was a street performer and playing in nightclubs in her band.

She has a lot to say about connecting with people and making it an art as to asking others to participate and support. Not just asking but welcoming people who want to support.

This eventually led to a break with her record label who saw her band's CD as a failure even though it sold 25,000 copies.

She then went to... you guessed it... crowdfunding. Her goal was $100,000 and she wound up with nearly $1.2 million.

Listen as she describes her story. We can all learn from her experience and the wisdom she shares...

That was awesome. It made me shift my feelings on some stuff. I think my basic views on asking for help, or participation is based on asking the wrong people. Its time to ask the fans. We don't have to ask the people who always say no, or use help to help themselves. We can connect with the most important people to us artists, the audience.

But that is acting! Engaging the audience and talking to them instead of the old gate keepers, is acting to evolve.

My Ma always said, a "no" you already have a "yes" you might get. In regards to hesitation towards asking someone for something you desire.

Vulnerability is how we grow. Good stuff!

I hesitate to come back to say this, because ultimately her message is true...but doing a little research, because I remember her success story at the beginning of Kickstarter, and be it that she's Neil Gaiman's girlfriend...well, she doesn't pay her band. Says she can't afford to..and be it that she got paid, her man likes to get paid lots of money...it smacks of fraud to me. Ofcourse I don't know the full details, but not paying your band anything seems kinda whack and fully contradictory to her message...well...maybe the band didn't "ask" her...

still, I take her message from the TED talks to heart.

So the vernacular she uses is they volunteered. Its in the video...I hear she comes from money from people who supposedly know her. I don't know why she needs volunteers if she's funded..I mean, don't get me wrong, sometimes you need volunteers...but your back up band? you don't pay? you ask them to volunteer?

weird

still, it is time to ask the audience because the gate keepers suck.

I don't know anything about this lady other than what's portrayed in the video. If she's not paying her band even after a campaign as successful as this one than maybe the band needs to develop the art of not working for free.
