On Wednesday March 20 2013 the sixteenth edition of the Holland Animation Film Festival (HAFF) opens with the premiere of an everything but usual biopic, A Liar’s Biography: The Untrue Story Of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman.

A sound recording from 1980 on which Graham Chapman, one of the founders of the legendary Monty Python, explains his controversial memoirs. Fifteen different animation studios were used to animate his personal life, in which he moves from a disadvantaged neighborhood to stardom.

This film leads you through Chapman’s eccentric life, from his experiences as a comedian to his many sexual adventures. The film shows some resemblance to the original Python in style and humor, but is also completely different, because the graphic artists clearly got the assignment to exceed even the absurdist Terry Gilliam in style.

Apart from Graham Chapman, who we hear as himself, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, Philip Bulcock, Carol Cleveland, Cameron Diaz and Margarita Doyle contributed to this film.

The Croods closing film of Holland Animation Film Festival

On Sunday the 24th of March the 16th Holland Animation Film Festival will close with the première of the colorful 3D animation film The Croods. The latest production by DreamWorks Animation is directed by Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders, known for the hit movie How To Train Your Dragon (2010). The Croods is the perfect closing film for the diverse festival and can be seen in theaters all over the country from the 27th of March.

The Croods tells the story of the world’s first family road trip. When their cave is destroyed, the Crood family must embark on a comedy adventure into strange and spectacular territory in search of a new home. As if patriarch Grug (Nicolas Cage) didn't already have enough to handle, it goes from bad to worse when they encounter an imaginative nomad named Guy (Ryan Reynolds). With Guy's help the Croods conquer their fear of the outside world and discover that they have exactly what it takes to survive – each other.

This long-awaited movie is based on an original idea by John Cleese. The Croods features the voices of Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener, Clark Duke and Cloris Leachman.

Winner Grand Prix Dutch animation

Hisko Hulsing received the first Grand Prix Dutch animation for his film Junkyard.

This film is a great piece of storytelling. Love, hatred and despair - the emotions in this film are really intense. It shows great craftsmanship.

About Junkyard (NL/BE, 2012)
A man is stabbed on the subway. Before he dies, childhood memories flash by of his best friend.


Best short animation
Winners Grand Prix shorts - non-narrative

Lei Lei and Thomas Sauvin won the Grand Prix shorts in the category non-narrative with Recycled. Both have been invited to put together a programme for HAFF 2014.

A film that unifies concept, technique and sound to create an almost epic portrait of anonymous humanity.

About Recycled (CN, 2012):
Some three thousand colour negatives found at Beijing rubbish dumps together show, at lightning speed, the city, its inhabitants and its transience.


Winner Grand Prix shorts – narrative

Jérémy Clapin received the Grand Prix shorts in the category narrative with his film Palmipedarium. He has been invited to put together a programme for HAFF 2014.

A film which greatly impressed us with its seamless and elegant direction creating a powerful yet delicately understated setting.

About Palmipedarium (FR, 2012):
A country boy knows ducks quite well. They fly, swim and make noise. One day, he finds a remarkable bird.

María Verónica Ramírez wins the Grand Prix features with her film Ánima Buenos Aires.

A drowning person washes ashore on the beach of a big city. Out of curiosity, he starts exploring. But the people he meets are strange and superficial.
