HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ANIMATION NATION!!!

Congratulations! Fourteen years, still going strong, and what a ride it's been - I'm so pleased to have been (and still be) part of the AN journey. That said, in honor of this occasion and everything Animation Nation stands for, I have one word for you...

PRICELESS.

What's the first thing you think of when you hear that word (besides those credit card commercials?) LoL I was at LACMA (L.A. County Museum of Art) the other day and it hit me like a ton of buses - ART is one of the only things in the world considered "priceless".

When you look around at life today, there's nothing but proof to back up that statement. We build million-dollar structures to feature and protect these priceless treasures of Art History. Every commercial revolves around visual multimedia. Technology's #1 selling point is audio-visual content. Every franchise, product, service, business, and idea out there is represented by a billion-dollar visual graphic or image.

This is called a "Brand."

Branding has been the official messenger and universal language of this planet for decades (and a lot longer if you count those paleolithic cave paintings.) So after all these years, here is the big question that still seems to be sweeping the creative community...

If these Brands are so valuable to most of the world, how come their creators don't seem to be?

Have I got your attention yet? I'm talking about you, me, US! WE are the creators and what we create is (potentially) PRICELESS!

I am very blessed to work as a full-time character layout artist on The Simpsons and receive outstanding payment and health benefits! This, however, makes me part of the vast creative minority. Most artists fall into the category of Freelance, Indie, or Unemployed (in some cases for years) and the reality is that even us full-time guys and gals are right back there when the work runs out (I, myself was laid off for 15 months.)

This isn't news! The entire creative industry is unpredictably organic in this way (and has been for decades), so wouldn't it be nice to have a means of financial support during these massive droughts? Something like, oh...say, a residual (royalty) for our work?

Musicians and writers already receive Creative Royalties - shouldn't this be an industrywide standard?

This is just one of the major issues, concerns, and suggested solutions within the creative community. There are lots more (and lots more we can DO about them) but the bottom line is that no one is going to fix this stuff for us. If we want to finally see improvement, we're going to have to stop complaining, start working together, and TAKE ACTION! And guess what...we have the power!! WE CAN!!!

If you agree or for any other reason feel the creative industries need an upgrade, please watch the above video then click here to read, sign, and share...

United We Brand: Artists Against Apathy! (The iPetition)

This petition is in no way meant to discount the industry perks we do receive as artists. It is simply a record of how many see room for improvement and are willing to ACT for progress within our industries. A small handful of artists already are, but it's going to take all of us working together, saying "No, I won't work unpaid overtime. Sorry, I can't just do this as a favor. My time, energy, and skills have value - just like yours."

Just because we love doing what we get paid for does not make it any less WORK!

On the contrary!! What we do is incredibly specialized. Creating art (in any form) is a tedious, laborious, heart-and-soul experience that takes a LOT out of any creator!!!

Given my current position and based on all work-for-hire scenarios, I am the one who needs this the least - and I still cared enough to act by creating and signing this petition. Why? Because we can (and will) ALL benefit from the progress and resolution it stands for! Want your voice to be heard? This is your Chance! Every one of us talks the talk...it's time we walked the walk! We are the artists!! We are the Brand and united...we are the change!!! :D

God Bless,
Chance

NOTE TO STUDENTS: Stay tuned to AN and the above links for future videos on how you can get directly involved in the Animation Industry by "paying your dues" without working for free, being (mis-)used, and contributing to a counterproductive cycle! =)

I love it! Dig Chances video too. Although I have to say, if we the people are the Union, then we should be able to work anywhere without paying anyone but ourselves.

That video was scary.

You had me going until the He Man thing happened.

Arguing with the Union is useless. This isn't some Union or animation industry thing, it's a human nature thing like I've said all along.

The same complaints being made about the animation community are the same complaints made about people in general in every aspects of our lives.

It may just be we've hit the top of human intelligence and this is the best we can expect until we start breeding for smarts and not farts.

I was never arguing with the Union, I was revealing them. I can't speak on the behalf of anyone, but since alot of the footage was me yappin with the dinosaurs (and not some of the great points Charles made at the meeting), the reasons behind me being there had nothing to do with arguing. I was there to support Charles but was glad to expose how weak they are. Not for me, cuz I knew, but for the members...

I don't think we've hit the top of our intelligence at all. Considering I think very highly of myself and the people who are around me, I'd say most people are just not exposed...its kinda like showing people how meat is processed. Makes one want to go vegetarian real quick. I hope if anything this makes a percentage, even if its a small amount, question where their dues are going...

I know going in that these guys were gonna lose it with Charles being the guest...and once I was able to jump in, well... You dont see the part where they call me an asshole, tell me to get the f*** out etc...it was quite comical. Jerry Beck flips me off and tells me to shut up.

AND it was on my birthday. Which was a great present for me to support Charles, who was invited to be apart of the meeting which I paid $10 to view..with no pizza hahahaha...and quite frankly didn't know they were taking questions for the audience until I got there..so the engaging part was totally impromptu.

these dudes are corrupt and the panel was wrong, in my opinion. Cuz the union is not the people. The people have nothing to do with it...not at all.

I dig where Chance is coming from. I support United we Brand even if the conclusions might differ from mine. But like I said in the video, I'm my own leader.

Did I say 655 signatures?

Well, it's a few hours later and we're at 736. 8-)

And you know who's signing? Ain't those pizza fed homies. Ain't that can't change law union. Ain't those flip you blogger historian critics who think we're the enemy.

It's young people getting ready to enter the biz in the next wave of awareness! ;)

United We Brand Update #1: Pro Beats Con! (Creative Freedom)

Postby ChanceRaz » Sat Mar 09, 2013 4:11 pm

A WORD OF ANIMATION INSPIRATION...

Howdy, friends!

Here's an update on the United We Brand iMovement. This little experiment seems to have taken off in a big way! To give you a better idea of why I started this petition (Sign Here), how far we've come in just 10 days, and all we have to be thankful for (and look forward to) as professional artists, check out the quick video above.

To clarify and elaborate just a bit, being "Professional" does not mean working for a studio, company, or even a full-time individual employer. These scenarios are all potential results of a professional mindset. To better understand what I mean by this and how to exercise professional behavior, please check out my AN thread on "Being Professional" here:

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4603

Finally, the bottom line: I started United We Brand for one simple reason - I had become discouraged with all of the complaining I was hearing from my colleagues, peers, and superiors within the entertainment industries. First off, everyone was all too eager to talk about "how bad things had gotten"...but few or none were willing to take a single action to actually address solutions. What's up with that?? To those who were, have, and whom inspired this iMovement, you know who you are and I thank (and credit) you!

Second, and this is the honest truth, guys..."things" really aren't as bad as they seem! They rarely are. For example, let's take the worst (employment) case scenario into consideration: You're unemployed, cannot find work, and cannot afford to be an "Active" member of your union anymore. Sounds pretty bleak at first, but look at where that leaves you - FREE!

You are FREE to create, distribute, and SELL your very own content anywhere you want (online or elsewhere), FREE to start up your very own crowdfunding campaign and generate a (potentially larger) income that way, FREE to get your other unemployed artist pals together and work on something you can all profit from, FREE to start your own independent business or get in touch with other like-minded people and partner up...the sky's the limit!

From here, it only gets better! The video goes into more detail about the perks of studio employment and union membership, but all of that is beside the point. The point is that these union/studio benefits are not necessary for us to thrive and succeed as creators! Sure, they help our reputations and make things easier (sometimes, and when received, we should be very grateful to get them), but when all of the bells and whistles are stripped away, what we have left is the most important thing of all - creative freedom!

Blogger, YouTube, Vimeo, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, GoFundMe, Kickstarter, IndieGoGo, MailChimp - ALL the resources we need to actually create, distribute, and sell are NOW FREE. We have finally reached a new Golden Age for artists! It's here!! NOW!!!

The only question left is...what are we going to do with it? :D

Go For It,
Chance
