Fate Core - Massive Kickstarter $ucce$$Imagine being a creative individual in a position where you don't have to show your portfolio to a studio to get work. You don't have to go knocking on doors, you don't have to worry about getting laid off, you don't have to concern yourself with how you'll pay your bills between gigs, etc...
Imagine being in a position where you can go look for a job if you want to cuz you're making more money on your own than being employed in a work for hire situation. That's not a fantasy anymore for an increasing number of our comrades as many successful crowdfunding campaigns are proving. Take for example "Fate Core". It's a role playing game by Fred Hicks and Evil Hat Productions in Springfield, Maryland. Initial goal was $3000 and as of this date there's 5,882 backers pledging $234,765 with 21 days to go. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/evilhat/fate-core? I think Fred was toying with his community or just being very safe with his $3k goal. Whatever the case, he's definitely doing it right cuz that's some crazy money he's gonna see for his project. Looks like he's done his homework as he has a lot of Facebook friends to go to as well as backing 119 Kickstarter projects himself. What goes around comes around! If you spend the time and make the effort developing your community you have the base for your franchise. People WANT to support projects like these! They'd rather fund cool projects by cool people than feed the corporate monster! This is the age we've been waiting for! Crowdfunding is making it possible!
Re: Fate Core - Massive Kickstarter $ucce$$How many artists in animation have heard of Fred Hicks in Silver Spring, Maryland?
Not very many I'm sure. Take a look at where his Kickstarter campaign is at... 6,570 backers pledging $262,879 of a $3,000 goal with 15 days yet to go. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/evilhat/fate-core Fred's generating more revenue in the span of his campaign than most artists working full time in animation in LA would make in 3 years time.
Re: Fate Core - Massive Kickstarter $ucce$$Yes indeed Greg!
Here's where the campaign is currently at... 6,865 backers pledging $276,401 of the initial $3,000 goal with 12 days to go. It could hit the $300k mark before it wraps up. Once again... Anyone working in animation ever here of Fred Hicks? How much money you guys making working 9 to 5? Even with freelance? Any of you guys working at a studio own the work you're creating?
Re: Fate Core - Massive Kickstarter $ucce$$This is nuts! Check out where the Fate Core campaign on Kickstarter is at...
8,050 backers pledging $337,671 of a $3,000 goal and there's still 4 days to go! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/evilhat/fate-core Boy, too bad Fred Hicks didn't pitch his idea to a studio. How can you be successful without pitching to a studio?
Re: Fate Core - Massive Kickstarter $ucce$$This turned out to be an especially juicy campaign. Why, you ask? Well I'll tell ya.
How about... 10,103 backers pledging $433,365 of an original $3,000 goal. Check it out... http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/evilhat/fate-core Boy don't ya miss the good ol days of pitching to a studio or a corporation or investment bankers and being told that your idea is a hard sell? Don't ya miss those golden days of constant rejections and even outright theft? Huge congrats to Fred Hicks on the success of the Fate Core Systems campaign on Kickstarter and for proving yet again that we don't need them anymore!
Re: Fate Core - Massive Kickstarter $ucce$$Man, all I've been doing is thinking about what my first campaign will be. Small, humble yielding high quality content.
Re: Fate Core - Massive Kickstarter $ucce$$It'll be very interesting to test the Brother Bite Cortez crowdfund market round one.
Can't wait to see it and promote!
Re: Fate Core - Massive Kickstarter $ucce$$THANKS C! Now I just gotta figure out what to do first. What makes the most sense etc etc.
