"Ben Hur" 1925 - chariot race

Yet another reason to love YouTube.

Perhaps one of the strongest examples of excellence in cinematography during the silent era in evidenced in the 1925 classic "Ben Hur" during the chariot race.

Starring Ramon Navarro in the title role and Francis X. Bushman as Messala, in the winged cap, his boyhood friend turned enemy, it's remarkable to see this kind of spectacle in a movie from so early in the history of motion pictures.

Take a look at the video and you'll see what I'm talking about.

How's this for comparison. The same sequence, the chariot race, from 34 years later in the remake of Ben Hur starring Charlton Heston, 1959.
