Holland Animation Film Festival
Submit your favourite films for Shareware!

Deadline 1 October 2010

14th Holland Animation Film Festival
3-7 November 2010

The Holland Animation Film Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary! Therefore the festival invites you to take part in the programme Shareware.

Did you see something amazing, crazy or cool on YouTube or Vimeo? Years ago at your first HAFF? Would you like to see it on the big screen again? Would you like everybody to see it? Let us know and share it!

Name the film title and tell us why everybody should see this. You can submit three films at most (not your own film). HAFF composes a programme with your suggestions and fetches the film in Utrecht especially for you. No cumbersome and well-considered canon but an exciting, subjective and dazzling selection animated films. Mind! The films can’t be older than HAFF, so 25 years at the oldest. No old dogs at the party.

The entries raffle for three free festival passe-partouts.

Please mail the following information to shareware@haff.nl

Film title, director, country, link to YouTube or Vimeo.

Your name, country and email address.

And last but not least a short motivation (in 25 words): why this film?

Poster HAFF 2010 made by Chinese artist in residence Sun Xun

Sun Xun (China, 1980) designed the festival poster. The active young visual artist and filmmaker often works in black-and-white with careful attention to symbolism and the handing down of history and myths. History lives on between truth and handed down stories, as an impression or virtual reality. A well-known character in his work is the magician, the only legitimate liar according to the artist. On the occasion of the HAFF anniversary the magician pulls the signs of the Chinese zodiac out of a hat.

At the moment Sun Xun is active in Utrecht as artist in residence, together with his assistent Shensi Niu in studios in the Centraal Museum and the Centre Visual Arts Utrecht (CBKU).

For the 2010 poster Joost Swarte took care of the colouring.

Phil Mulloy directed the HAFF leader

Film maker Phil Mulloy directed the leader of HAFF 2010. Phil Mulloy (UK, 1948) attended the Ravensbourne College of Art (Painting), and the Royal College of Art (film). For the next years he worked as a freelance writer/director of live-action films. He started making animation in 1989 and since then he designed, produced, animated and directed a long list of award-winning films. His thick bold black lines, black humour and intentionally primitive animation became his trademark. His animation is generally censored as suitable for persons of 18 years and older. His latest feature film Goodbye Mister Christie (2010) has been selected for the HAFF competition for features.

Prizewinners
Holland Animation Film Festival 2010

Winner Grand Prix HAFF Feature Film
Chico y Rita, Javier Mariscal, Fernando Trueba, Tono Errando, (Spain, United Kingdom, 2010)

Winners Dioraphte Grand Prix HAFF
Hand Soap, Kei Oyama (Japan, 2009)
Freud, Fish and Butterfly, Haiyang Wang, Liu Zengyin, (China, 2009)

Grand Prix HAFF Commissioned Films
N.A.S.A Featuring Tom Waits and Kool Keith: Spacious Thoughts, Fluorescent Hill, (Canada, 2009)

And the winners are…

Grand Prix HAFF Feature Film
Chico y Rita
Javier Mariscal, Fernando Trueba, Tono Errando (Spain/United Kingdom, 2010)
Jury report: It’s a classical love story that bridges different continents and moments in time, using music to weave a nostalgic web of memories and to bring a beautiful and melancholic story to a unified whole.

Dioraphte Grand Prix HAFF Narrative Short
Hand Soap
Kei Oyama (Japan, 2009)
Jury report: Using a collage of thoughtful and sometimes visceral imagery to provoke an uncomfortable, claustrophobic sense of loneliness we felt that Hand Soap was the most absorbing and complete experience.

Dioraphte Grand Prix HAFF Non-narrative Short
Freud, Fish and Butterfly
Haiyang Wang, Liu Zengyin (China, 2009)
Jury report: This naturally flowing piece draws its audience into a dreamlike stream of consciousness. Unpretentious in style and poetic in structure this film allows space for interpretation whilst taking us on a beautifully drawn, seamless, physiological journey. We felt that Freud, Fish and Butterfly offered up what felt like a small piece of a far bigger picture.

Grand Prix HAFF Commissioned Films
N.A.S.A Featuring Tom Waits and Kool Keith: Spacious Thoughts
Fluorescent Hill (Canada, 2009)
Jury report: This film was a unanimous choice by the jury. It left an immediate impression on all of us. It is a convincing, sustained work that makes clear expressive choices that were flawlessly executed. It beautifully merges image and sound. Watching the work was a powerful, immersive experience.

Grand Prix HAFF European Student Film
Miramare
Michaela Müller, Academy of Fine Arts Zagreb (Croatia/Switzerland, 2009)
Jury report: This film gave the strong sense that it was made from personal experience. The convergence of the two subjects, camping holidays and the labour of the immigrants, was subtly accomplished. The aesthetical choice enabled an experience in which unbearable lightness was contrasted to a heaviness that lays behind. The Jury would very much like to see more work of the artist.

1st Prize Competition Dutch Animation (Audience Award)
Wat wil jij?
Christa Moesker, Margriet Westerhof (The Netherlands, 2009)

MovieSquad HAFF Award
An Abstract Day
Oerd van Cuijlenborg (The Netherlands, 2010)

MovieSquad HAFF Junior Awards
Jury Award: La Tête dans les Étoiles (Head in the Stars), Sylvain Vincendeau (France, 2005)
Audience Award: Le Loup à Poil (The Bare-Wolf), Valére Lommel, Joke van der Steen (France/Canada, 2010)

1st Prize Competition HAFFTube
Silver Junkie: Maria
Gitte Le Bruyn (Belgium, 2010)
