The young Chinese artist Sun Xun (1980, Fluxin China) has been invited by the Holland Animation Film Festival (HAFF) in Utrecht as their artist-in-residence. With this special residency, the HAFF spans a bridge between art and cinema.
During his residency, Sun Xun devotes himself to the creation of a large artwork, combining animations, video screenings, wall paintings and assorted objects in unique ways. The audience is welcomed to closely follow the creative process and the progress of the art piece.

From 10 September through 31 October 2010, Sun Xun works in a studio in the Centrum Beeldende Kunst Utrecht (CBKU) in the heart of the city. At the same time, the artist will transfer, in phases, a selection of the fruits of his residency to the Centraal Museum, also located in Utrecht. Here, Xun will continue working on his artwork and gradually an exhibition will emerge. For the entire period, the CBKU and the Centraal Museum are accessible to the audience.

In October, the residency is expanded with two public activities. In lectures and a master class by Sun Xun, the themes in Xun’s work are addressed and discussed. The current affairs in China will play a substantial role here. Xun’s brand new animation film 21G, which will have its world première at the International Film Festival in Venice, will also be examined and it will be screened during the Holland Animation Film Festival.

The exhibition at the Centraal Museum will be officially opened on the first day of the 14th edition of the Holland Animation Film Festival on Wednesday 3 November, and will run until Sunday 9 January 2011.

Sun Xun
Xun’s work combines a whole range of different media. Photography, painting, installation art, animation and film come together to form a beautiful whole. Xun freely employs the possibilities of all sorts of art, which yields an entirely unique imagery. He breaks away from the first generation of Chinese artists with his socially committed and politically slanted work. Xun is particularly fascinated with the history of his country. The symbolism in his work, the recognisable elements and the use of light and sound are both disquieting and playful. The subject ‘The lie’ is a constant element in Sun Xun’s work. ‘What is a lie and what is reality, you can never be sure’, he says.

More information about Sun Xun’s work is available on the website of the Holland Animation Film Festival http://www.haff.nl
