Richard, I think this technology is probably based upon similar motion capture technology that Disney used to animated a young Jeff Bridges in "Tron Legacy". In the film he faces his own self from 30 years before. The digitally created face of him as a young man is animated upon his own face using complex mocap. As soon as I saw it in a promo about the movie today, I thought of this article that you posted and figured it could be the same or something very close to it.
