MONSTER ANIMATORS JOIN FORCES FOR "MIND RIP"

Producers John Vincent and Mike Boas know animation and they know horror movies. They also know what makes for great animation WITHIN a horror movie: stop-motion... not CGI. That's why they're assembling a team of stop motion and visual effects artists to bring the creatures for their feature film "MIND RIP" to life.

Vincent, like many filmmakers, was inspired by effects artists like Ray Harryhausen. As young as the age of eight, Vincent shot clay characters moving across his bedroom floor with an 8mm camera. He grew up to make filmmaking his career. In the 1990s, Vincent worked for David Allen Productions, creating effects for low budget genre movies like Freaked (a cult favorite) and Full Moon productions such as Robot Wars, Doctor Mordrid and Prehysteria.

Boas, meanwhile, has loved horror movies (especially those with humor) since seeing Gremlins and Ghostbusters. His animated short films have played at festivals around the world. "H.P. Lovecraft's The Other Gods" tells a story from the mythological Dreamlands and is a fan favorite among Lovecraft readers.

This is to say that Vincent and Boas love animation with their horror. So in addition to practical effects, special make-up, and rod puppets, they want some animation artists in their corner when producing Mind Rip.

Mind Rip characters that will be realized using stop-motion include Boil Head (a giant bug-eyed hot rod model-kit brought to life) and a flying insect-like creature made from sugical tools. For this animation, Mind Rip will rely on the talents of Yancy Calzada and Ron Cole.

Yancy Calzada has worked with Doug Beswick, Dave Allen, and the Chiodo Brothers on films such as Evil Dead 2, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3, Beetlejuice, Puppet Master 2, and many others. (For more of his stop-motion work, see http://yancycalzada.blogspot.com/p/stop-motion.html ) His recent work has been in the realm of computer graphics for movies like Battledogs, Prianha 3D, and Poseidon Rex. Mind Rip will give him a chance to get back to his stop-motion roots.

Ron Cole has worked in TV, features, short films, and commercials for over 25 years. His most notable credits include the Back to the Future Ride, Muppet Treasure Island, and Sinbad: The Fifth Voyage, as well as TV ads including The Pillsbury Doughboy, Frito’s Corn Chips and many others. (Ron's work can be seen at http://wobblytripod.blogspot.com ) He's been a supporter of Mind Rip throughout the development process, and it seemed a natural fit to bring him on board.

While Mind Rip's effects will be done practically, compositing of elements will be done with the latest software. For that, the production will rely on visual effect supervisor Joseph Grossberg (G.I. Joe, The A-Team, Van Helsing, Species 2) and visual effects coordinator/producer Paul Alexiou (Watchmen, Corpse Bride, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban).

With Calzada, Cole, Grossberg, and Alexiou on board, the animation for Mind Rip is in steady hands.
