This is an election year for the animation union.

Are you interested in running for office?

There's absolutely no information about this on their site nor their blog. No information on what you need to qualify to run. No information about when the election will take place.

Did you know that in 2010 which was the last election the person who was voted in as president of the Guild ran unopposed?

Think about what it would be like if there was a campaign organized around running for union office.

What if someone ran for president and used all the resources at their disposal to organize a campaign that actually addressed issues that union artists face as well as those that we all deal with?

Wouldn't it be great to see someone in the Guild take this seriously enough to actually organize a campaign and bring it to the forefront?

It's never happened before. This would be a first and I'm sure it would be a very beneficial and positive thing if we were to see someone in the Guild take the election seriously and move forward in a way that would engage the entire animation community.

Imagine an election season where people running for union office actually make a case for what they're trying to achieve.

Where the issues that face the union and everyone in animation are actually discussed. Where there's a choice of candidates who articulate their positions and motivate members to get involved and vote. Not just for them but for a clear direction for the union as well.

An election where people currently in office and who are running again are called to give account what they've accomplished over the past three years and what they look to achieve in the next three years.

Where younger artists you are establishing themselves as leaders and who have new ideas and energy and positive, inclusive, can-do attitudes take over from the old guard and end the legacy of divisiveness and negativity of the current Guild leadership.

It's possible. We can realize change. It can happen this year.

Even though I see no use for a Union, I'd support any movement on the subject. Awareness starts with movement.

This is an election year for the Guild. So I guess that the do nothing about it until it's too late leadership of the union is now trying to do something about something that should've been done years ago.

Case in point, the abusive tests that even established veteran storyboard artists are forced to take in order to get a job at a union studio on a union production.

Ain't it great to have an animation union that takes 20 years to get around to addressing problems like this?

Anyway, the issue of tests is going to be discussed at the next meeting of the benefits management company that's supposed to stop abuses but never does. Leading the way is none other than their business rep. You know. The man who believes that you can't change law and that artists should get screwed in their first deal so they can learn something.

That's May 28, 2013 at around... what time? I don't know. After work in the evening.

Wanna bet that nothing happens? That is unless union artists show up and address a more pressing issue first.

Where's the meaningful leadership? Does it exist at all in animation? Do you guys really need more empty rhetoric? If they can't do the job then why are you still putting up these guys?

Why don't you run for office?

Interesting meeting last night wasn't it. More people are seeing what this union's leadership is about.

You won't make much progress with the current status quo. If you want to realistically address the problems that face Guild members at Guild studios then you'll have to get Guild artists at the helm who are committed to reform.

Here's some info that came my way as to the process of running for office.

To be eligible for an elected position in TAG you must have minimum 2 years membership. Anyone meeting this requirement can run for any position on the board. The business rep is the only position that is exclusively full time and you aren't allowed to do freelance or work at a studio if you take the position. All other positions are part time. If you are on the board you have to attend a minimum of at least 3 union meetings per 6 month periods. The process of running is to go the meeting in late September and you are nominated and put on the ballot. The election is in November.
