Global Times Li Shuang June 9, 2010 Aron Warner, the producer of the Oscar-winning cartoon feature Shrek, led a team of Hollywood producers and designers to Beijing to talk about the success of Hollywood's animation industry. Only a quarter of the anticipated number of participants signed up for the three-day course, an outcome the organizer blames on the Chinese cartoon industry being too protected to invest in learning. The Hollywood Master Animation Classes kicked off on Monday, with speakers including Warner, Kungfu Panda's visual development artist Henrik Tamm, executive producer of Crash Jan Korbelin and Marina Grasic, executive producer of Alpha Dog. The classes cost 5,000 yuan ($732.02) to sign up, but only 24 Chinese cartoon producers nationwide did. "Initially we were hoping for at least 100 attendees, so we could recover the 500,000 yuan ($73,201.61) cost of bringing Aron's team to China," Tuo Ya, executive organizer and member of China's Cartoon Industry Committee told the Global Times.
