Zombie Love Song - 2 million YT views in 2 days

Postby Charles » Fri Feb 11, 2011 10:32 am

Further evidence as to how much things have changed and continue to change, and another testament to the potential of the Internet especially in delivering an audience for content, check out this animated music video.

It's called "Zombie Love Song" and as of this posting it's had 2,090,795 views on YouTube.

That's significant of course, for any video to have that many views, but what's makes this even more phenomenal is that the videio was uploaded on February 9.

Only two days ago.

If you think that's a lot of views, this animated music video cut from the same fabric has had 7,815,310 views as of this writing, since January 26. That's two weeks and a day.

Song is funny.

This is very significant and it's great news. If you can get 2 million views in 2 days, and 7 million views in 2 weeks, why would you need TV?

What's the point in pitching to execs when you can pitch to an audience. Your audience.

Man, this is so great.

And to make it even better, they direct the viewer to the purchase of the song.

There's the economy.

And it's entirely independent and straight to the people.

If this is the future then sign me up baby.

and don't forget the youtube partnership program which basically enables the user to sign up for an ad revenue system thus putting more money directly into the creator's pocket.

Youtube is just the distribution, the venue or link to an audience. no middle man. direct access. It's how it should be.

In the 22 hours since I posted my original comments, the views for "Zombie Love Song" on YouTube are now at 3,863,566.

Almost doubled in a day, and there's still 2 hours to go until we're at 24 hours. Amazing.

The other video, "My Balls" is at 8,132,833. That's an increase of more than 317,000 in the same time since yesterday.

It's a new day for content creators.

Zombie Love Song is at 8,992,010 views in one month. And that's a February month with only 28 days. I'm sure it'll break 9 mil by 31 days.

That's amazing.

Think about what musicians and singers and performers and rock bands and what have you from years before went through dealing with the music industry for who knows how long.

And here's a crudely animated independently produced Flash music video with a good song that's been viewed and listened to 9 million times in a month with a method of purchase available. No record companies, no vinyl to press, no plastic to sell, no physical object involved in the purchase of the music other than a computer or a personal communication device.

The future is now.

part of the success is due to the creator's or co-creator's popularity on youtube as a youtube vlogger or whatever you call it. In fact i would say that is the sole reason why it is successful. Ray William Johnson makes videos that basically group together a bunch of popular preexisting viral videos or videos that are going viral. He then adds his "witty" commentary. So basically what he does is take other content from videos on youtube and uses their collective popularity to be a one-stop place for youtube visitors. He updates frequently which is necessary in maintaining his large audience/subscribers.

you can read more about it here:

Much the same way other sites like cartoonbrew use others content as a vehicle for catalyzing commentary and or hits, this method has gained him lots of popularity. So when he releases a song and then links in his weekly vlog videos he is already promoting it to his pre-established fanbase that is in the millions.

The number of views therefore doesn't surprise me that much because he was basically and internet celebrity before releasing the music video. I'd doubt it would get as many views if it were released by a normal no-name band. In fact there are probably tons of no-name bands posting their content on youtube who might have excellent content but no fanbase or audience.

What is more impressive to me is the Duck song you posted because it seems like that was one of the rare occasions where something grew out of nothing.

I am not knocking the video, but trying to add some context to it's popularity and view count. Also it's just an example of the way things are going. People are demanding more and more content through the internet. Their attention spans are shortened and thus a lot of content (even if it's really good) becomes quickly disposable for the conditioned add consumer. Music videos are one of the few things that last a bit longer than your average viral video because of the replay value of the song. Most higher quality animated content does not fare as well because of the lack of audience as i previously mentioned as well as a minimal replay value.

Content is king indeed, but it seems now the providers and distributors of the vast amounts of content benefit the most. It's like the dj analogy. The Dj can play 30 hits in one night and get popular for playing great songs. Unless you're the beatles it's highly unlikely you can even get get past 1 or 2 top charting singles.
The same goes for those producing animated content. However, the important thing here is the fact that if you work hard enough and target your demographics (web popculture junkies and LCD audiences) you can develop a fanbase and profit off it with no middle man. The only people taking the money of course would be youtube or your distributors.

Interesting times indeed.
