Job Function:

The Ben Maltz Gallery within the Gallery and Public Programs Department is creating a pool of temporary employees to work on an as-needed-basis on special projects in the Gallery and throughout campus. This is an “on-call” position. The Preparator works on a per-project basis under the supervision of the hiring department and is supervised by the Exhibition Coordinator/Gallery Registrar to install and de-install exhibitions. The Ben Maltz Gallery organizes 4-7 exhibitions per year on and off campus. Depending on the type of exhibition, the installation/de-installation schedule ranges from 5 to 15 days (approximately 40 to 120 hours per installation period), Monday-Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm with a half hour unpaid lunch (7.5 hours per day). Some weekend work may be required.

Responsibilities:

Building walls, pedestals and/or shelves; Repairing and painting walls; Setting up and striking audio and/or video equipment; Completing condition reports for all incoming and outgoing artwork; Packing, crating, and hanging artwork; All other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in an arts related field or a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts is preferred. Must have experience hanging, packing and crating artwork. Knowledgeable with use of shop and hand tools (table, jig, chop saws, drills, pneumatic nail or staple gun, etc.). Able to paint interior spaces. Experience with wall repair and restoration. General knowledge of A/V and computer equipment installation. General carpentry/woodworking skills for building pedestals, shelving or walls. General knowledge of framing and building walls and hanging and finishing drywall. General knowledge of hardware, building, and artwork packing supplies and materials. Able to complete artwork condition reports. Must be punctual, reliable and neat. Must be able to work independently with little or sporadic supervision. Must be able to complete physically demanding tasks and lift reasonably heavy items: minimum 25 lbs. Able to work with a diverse range of personalities with varying musical tastes.
