AN's Side Topics was a good idea and has had historical significance for the animation community, but I think the community isn't capable of grasping it.
What was there before AN's Side Topics Forum that could gauge the temperment of the community as far as socio-political and economic issues are concerned?
Nothing. AN broke through in many ways with Side Topics.
Unfortunately, the maturity level of many of the discussions left much to be desired. I'm not discounting my own bevavior at times, and it's easy to get pulled into the emotions, one way or another, of issues that people feel passionate about. And I don't blame others for feeling strongly about issues that are important to them either.
A few of our members went or would go overboard with Side Topics, and that affected the entire site. If some of these people put the same enthusiastic focus of their time and energy into animation related subjects, it would've been a different story. Instead, we wound up with tolerating as best we could some obsessions about things that have little to do with animation and the industry as a whole.
For all the problems, much more good came about from it as well. There were lots of funny items shared, subjects that dealt with all sorts of things from the environment to world economics to sports to alternative energy, you name it.
I choose to focus on the things that made AN's Side Topics unique and special in its significance to the animation community as a whole.
If you're interested in getting involved in the next version of Side Topics, we'll be building out a non-animation aspect to the new forums which will include several catagories that used to be under the Side Topics banner.
To start with, we have the Current Events Forum that just went up.
We'll be adding other areas in non-animation soon.
AN and the new forums are there for you. I encourage our members to register their accounts at the new forums and enjoy what this new platform has to offer.
