Stephen Chow is a genius. People are talking about Sin City as live-action animation. Now THIS is live-action animation!
Some of the jokes in this film are pure class. The whole film is hilariously funny and at turns touching and outrageously bizarre in its sight gags. The story follows a young Shaolin monk trying to find new applications for Kung Fu in everyday living, much to the chagrin of his Brothers. Be it slipping on banana's, parallel parking or snipping overgrown trees, the guy sees ways in which Kung Fu could come in handy for normal people. Unfortunately, some of his ideas (hilarious, Kung Fu and music) don't work until an old retired soccer coach finds him and convinces him that soccer is the way.
Seriously, put aside your notions of Kung Fu films (particularly that awful American comedy Kung Pow), find a copy and sit down for some of the best comedy and slapstick ever commited to celluloid. Some of the CG can be a little off, but never distractingly so, and watching football has never been so utterly hilarious. It's a soccer film fused with the spirit of Bruce Lee and Chuck Jones!
Can't wait to see Chow's latest - Kung Fu Hustle!

Shaolin Soccer is definitely one of those overlooked gems. If you can get your hands on it, the original Chinese version has a different score, and scenes cut from the american version.
Haven't seen Kung Fu Hustle yet though.

The UK release DVD has both the original HK cut (with the brilliant and touching lovestory element) and the American dub and cut. I'd imagine the release in the states is the same?
Based on the reviews, Kung Fu Hustle is something special indeed!

What, they cut the love story out of the American version? Why?!
This is one of the funniest movies ever! The CG looks really fake, lighting and texture wise, but the way it moves along with the live action it still looks pretty convincing. Just the concept alone was quite refreshing when compared to other kung fu movies.
Stephen Chow has recently finished a new film, that should be out soon: "Gong fu", or "Kung fu Hustle". I've seen some footage on tv, and it looks hilarious.

I actually thought the CGI was just fine.... never bothered me.
(And again; did they really cut out the love story in the US version????)

Apparently, they did. I remember there was a huge kerfuffle amongst the film nerds at Aintitcoolnews about it.
Personally, I think it makes the film. It's hilariously uncomfortable, mainly because Mai is a more realistically formed character. The whole bit at the end is hilarious!
"Go back to Mars, the Earth is dangerous!"
Had me cracking up. Now I'm wondering whether to get Kung Fu hustle on import or wait for an official Optimum release in the UK.
