I saw the sneak tonight. Interestingly, it is a strongly opinionated film, but not about the Iraq war, Bush or anything political like that.

Beneath the humor, there's a lot of anger at institutions and individuals Parker and Stone know well. The main hated institution is the macho action film that's the bread and butter of Hollywood, and the hated people are message-laden celebrities. Many of whom are directly parodied on-screen, and undoubtedly without approval.

Although the marionette work is...well, marionette work...meaning it has limited flexibility...I was surprised to see they used a different technique to actually provide expressions on the characters' faces. And the detail and scope of some of the settings are amazing. It puts Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's work to shame.

***MINOR SPOILERS SECTION START***

Listen to the soundtrack. There are lyrics that specifically parody film institutions and individuals. I won't say any more, except you'll probably want to buy the soundtrack.

The independent film "Reflections of Evil" by Damon Packard is supposed to have the world's longest and most enthusiastic vomiting scene. Not any more.

Finally, the "marionette sex" in the film is amazingly done - and isn't confined to one scene.

***END OF SPOILERS***

SEAN PENN RIPS 'TEAM AMERICA' CREATORS IN ANGRY MEMO

**Exclusive**

October 6, 2004

To Trey Parker and Matt Stone,

I remember a cordial hello when you guys were beginning to be famous guys around Hollywood at some party. I remember several times getting a few giggles out of your humor. I remember not being bothered as you traded on my name among others to appear witty, above it all, and likeable to your crowd. I never mind being of service, in satire and silliness.

I do mind when anybody who doesn't have a child, doesn't have a child at war, or isn't or won't be in harm's way themselves, is encouraging that there's "no shame in not voting" "if you don't know what you're talking about" (Mr. Stone) without mentioning the shame of not knowing what your talking about, and encouraging people to know. You guys are talented young guys but alas, primarily young guys. It's all well to joke about me or whomever you choose. Not so well, to encourage irresponsibility that will ultimately lead to the disembowelment, mutilation, exploitation, and death of innocent people throughout the world. The vote matters to them. No one's ignorance, indcluding a couple of hip cross-dressers, is an excuse.

All best, and a sincere **** you,

Sean Penn

P.S. Take this as a personal invitation from me to you (you can ask Dennis Miller along for the ride as well) to escort you on a trip, which I took last Christmas. We'll fly to Amman, Jordan and I'll ride with you in a (?) 12 hours through the Sunni Triangle into Fallujah and Baghdad and I'll show you around. When we return, make all the fun you want.

Developing...

What a funny movie!!!!
I saw it with a packed house, and the crowd loved it.
These guys know exactly how to poke fun at people.
I can only hope that toys are created from this film, because the Sean Penn puppet is amazing!
In a nutshell, if you like South Park, you will love Team America.
[cheers]

And Sean Penn proves again he's a spoiled jerk who believes his own publicity agent. You don't pull off ego like that unless you have the body of work to justify it - and Penn is no Streep.

On the other hand, although I haven't seen anything yet, I'll bet Michael Moore is giggling at his presentation in the movie. Remember he interviewed Trey Parker in "Bowling for Columbine," one of the few non-wiseass interviews Parker ever gave. And they certainly didn't claim Moore was a member of the Film Actor's Guild, a far worse insult.

Saw it last nite at the Burbank AMC...it was pretty packed, if not sold out. I think it's safe to say that everyone in that theater, including me, loved it. I hope Trey Parker keeps making movies....seeing something that funny in a theater really reminds me how there have been almost NO worthwhile comedies in the past few years. I mean...Taxi? Come the f*ck on...

I gotta add that it's nice to see an R rated movie that's truly fuuny, instead of a watered down PG-13 piece of crap made for the teeny bopper market.

What was the Moore depiction? Matt Stone was interviewed in Bowling - and later criticized Moore's depiction of Charlton Heston, adding, "it's hard to make Heston look sympathetic, but Moore did"

I'd be curious to know. I'll see it, ASAP, but that might take a few weeks, so I wouldn't mind some light spoilers.

Well I don't wanna spoil it too much, but Moore is depicted as a big fat whining marrionette w/ mustard stains and holding a hot dog or something, and is part of the protesting "F*ck Team America" crowd.
