From Afghanistan (copied from the Union Leader):

SINCE THE British relinquished control of Afghanistan in 1919, the remote, mountainous nation has been ruled by kings, Soviet puppets and Islamist tyrants. On Saturday its residents cast ballots, unharmed, for a new kind of government — one chosen and operated by the people.

Faced with the prospect of attacks at polling places, the people showed up anyway. They were undeterred, and perhaps their bravery disheartened the would-be terrorists lurking in the shadows. United Nations observers contradicted the claims of opposition presidential candidates who said the elections were compromised by irregularities. Those candidates have since dropped their unsubstantiated charges.

As England's Whigs joined together to empower Parliament at the expense of the king, so Afghanistan's people have taken to the polls to weaken the remnants of totalitarianism.

Saturday's peaceful election was an important historical event, made even more important by the lack of widespread violence. Too bad the Big Media have decided that a successful exercise of democracy in al-Qaida's former hideout is hardly worth covering.

I don't know what "Big Media" you are referring to because that was front page news on several newspapers in my area (Philadelphia metro) as well as the lead news on ABC Nightly News.

And I will assert here that I still fully endorse President Bush's actions in Afghanistan: they attacked us, they were an oppressive regime as well as a rogue nation.

Are you suggesting that this wasn't covered? I heard plenty about it. Including the news about opponents protesting results and then backing off, etc. There was plenty of air time given to it -- didn't you?

It was all over CBC radio, in fact they did a big thing on the amount of Women involved in the election. Great stuff.

I will echo Painter most countries supported US action in Afghanistan and felt US had a legitimate reason to attack. It had/has extensive international pressence and support. Anybody care to compare and contrast to Iraq?

Eh... it was downplayed as far as the enourmous success that it was.

PS
The Taliban did not attack us.

Many Democrats, though perhaps not painter, DID protest this war as well... not waiting for Iraq.

Iraq will see similarly historic elections as well, and we will weap that they are still not under Saddam's thumb (thumbscrews), won't we.

How was it "downplayed" when it was front page news? That's more of your wishful thinking to erect straw men of liberals and democrats.

And what Democrats protested? Name them.

Are you confusing them with extreme liberal activists and pacifists? Some of them may be registered democrats just as the Montana Freemen, the Branch Davidians, the John Birch Society and other loony far-right, black helicopter, New-World-Order-fearing conspiracy nuts may be registered Republicans.

Talk about hypocritical. Neither did Iraq.
