This will be my one and only election rant but in a way it sums up all my other problems with Bush's leadership qualities. I expect many here will move on to another post after I make my first statement since it sounds ridiculous even to me. Yet sometimes even a fool may speak. aye

With all the emphasis on who's got more religion in this campaign I'd like to ask whose side is God really on?

Because as far as I can tell he's backing both sides. Or maybe hes just sitting this one out in some version of Als Bar in Heaven having a stiff drink. I'm not talking Kerry/Bush.

I'm talking Bush/Terrorists

I don't know how many of the terrorists are Jihadists but i assume the majority of the suicide bombers are. I assume this because its hard to cash in on any earthly reward when there is nothing left but your left hand to take the bribe. But you can cash in at Heaven if your killed in a Holy War and maybe leave your family with a little cash to boot.

The radical Muslim terrorists had a pretty good day:

50 iraqui troops shot execution style. 50 human lives. Today I watched Bush gloss over those 50 lives like the statistics they represent in his head. the presidents handlers ought to tell him don't get cocky when your talking about dead troops. We also bombed a headquaters in Fallujah and killed a few more innocent Iraqis so add that to the total. Whos total? Ours or theirs?By the way anyone got the latest Civilian death totals handy?

See I'm not sure which of Gods believers is winning here because both side are fighting in Gods name.

I looked up some history of the origins of jihad to get some idea of the religious justification for their actions and this one seemed fairly scholarly in tone.

Dr. Eyad Sarraj, a Palestinian psychiatrist stated in Newsweek, April 8, 2002:

quote:
"This is the influence of the Koran, the most potent and powerful book for the past 14 centuries. God promised Muslims who sacrificed for Islam that they would not die. They will live on in paradise. Muslims hold to the promise literally."

So I'm guessing from a jihadist terrorist point of view they are doing holy work in the eyes of God. According to our administration we are also acting for Gods purpose. Bush in fact has said he believes it a crusade.

I attended a born again christian chuch service a couple months back down in San Diego, Maranatha Church its called, and the speaker promised that for anyone who gave up his life for Jesus Christ he had a prayer that would transform your life forever. All your sins would be washed away and you would have eternal life through Jesus. And if you didn't give your life to Jesus you would be damned. Parallels rather closely doesn't it?

It would really be great to have the Lord explain this all to me instead of George Bush or a jihadist or some dude in the Maranatha church. But He never speaks to me though I've asked him more times than I can remember. Lately I've been asking him every day. It's actually a pact I made with the people I'm living with now. Perhaps He is very busy taking in all those new folks arriving in Heaven now, our troops. Iraqui civilians. the Jihadists, the 3.3 million who have died in violence and starvation as a result of the genocide in the congo and Rwanda. I guess during that last item president Bush must have been talking to God about stem cells and missed it.

Bush has declared this war serves Gods purpose. So has the enemy. well I say both lie in the name of God. I say this is a lie that makes it easy to people to forget how complex the real world actually is, to forget about 7,000 years of Muslim history, culture, religion and geo politics, to forget about the world of the 21st century. I say if this is what America has become we are blind and lost in a dream.
God if your there please help us wake up.

cheers

Thanks for opening the can.

On a less significant front, I was watching game #1 the other night and one of the pitchers (I'm pretty sure it was Schilling) said that he'd "become a Christian 8 years ago" and felt that God was at work in their victory. I can't remember his exact wording, and I'm messing it up somehow. My immediate thought was, "I'm sure god could give a rat's bald butt about who wins a baseball game."

I tried the born again thing myself for a few years, and it didn't give me any peace or serenity. Kinda made me more neurotic. I gave up trying to figure out which religion is right, or if there really is a dog... I mean god. Strangely enough, that same god is pretty important to me, personally. How he/she/it deals with the rest of the world ain't my problem.

If God took sides, it'd be like stabbing himself in the eye with a sharp stick.

I also think that the pronoun you use for god should depend on your own gender, but that, like all spirityal decisions, should remain private and personal. George's jihad scares the pants off me, but like so many other waves in history, this too shall pass.

Caracal,

As an atheist/agnostic I completely agree with you BUT...

This thread is going to open a topic that will NEVER get resolved. One thing that I am positive about is that when an individual's faith or deity gets questioned or insulted, great ugliness ensues.

I hope that Charles or one of the other mods locks this thread down before it descends to that level.

I'll end with this quote from Alan Moore: "the only place where one can prove God exists is in the human mind."

it's here I sit and rust amid this ruin and rancor like tire irons
toothy grills and car parts before me...

Joseph Campbell said it best. "Religion gets in the way of having a religious experience."

I believe it was the great philospher, Moses Maimonides (RamBam), that said "No one, but Moses, can know the true nature of G_d."

I don't claim any special knowledge of G-D, but I strongly suspect that he has a really hard time finding a bookie.

God and Satan had a bet once.. They bet on who had a better baseball team. God said.."You can't beat me, I have all of the Yankees!".. to which Satan replied.. "Ya, but I have all of the Umpires!"..

I am so friggin happy the Red Sox won!
In the midst of all that is happening in the world at least the curse of the Bambino has been lifted! Also I am glad this thread did NOT get shut down because I don't think I did anything more than speak from my heart, my truth as it were. Me thinks most here are honest decent folk. Its only our leaders I worry about.

Cheers
