Ugh. No matter who wins, I usually have great faith in America. However, I find it being tested more and more frequently. Both sides are predicting doom for our country if the other wins. I think that Bush won't destroy our country, Kerry won't, and even the terrorists won't. No, if anyone destroys America, it will be Americans. Look at the Bin Laden tape and you can see that even HE is using our own divisiveness against us. The increasingly polarized media both plays to and helps to create an increasingly polarized population. There is money to be made in giving people an enemy, but we've gone so far as to make that enemy our fellow Americans.

I thought we had moved past hating people who are different from us. But no, you'd better not have an alternate opinion from me or I'll call you all manner of names even though I hardly know you, or even if you're my own family. It's really disgusting, folks. Let's get back to being civilized. Happy Halloween!

Oops. Charles, I meant for this to be a reply to your closing comments thread and somehow I hit the wrong button. Can you move it? Thanks and sorry.

Squash if our leaders represented the values you have we would all have a much better country. No one more than I am dismayed by the partisan split which has occured in America. We are supposed to honor the sacrifice of those who fought for our right to a democracy. 45 percent of elgible voters have ignored that sacred resposibility to vote. Why? I'm a registered Democrat but I would gladly switch to a John Mcain if given the choice because he is the better man. He has honor. Frankly I think there is a deep rooted need for truth which we are not hearing from our leaders Democrat and Republican alike. If both parties actually represented their founding principals I think we would be in better shape than we are now. I don't know what the answer is but I know we need truth and honor.
cheers

Caracal, I agree entirely (although I don't begin to wish everyone was like me, thanks anyway [Wink] . The only thing I would add or clarify about my opinion is the fact that the American people are still at fault here, because we don't WANT to hear the truth. Both sides want to hear their opinion supported, and of course the truth rarely supports one side over the other, or can be twisted to support both. The reason our elected officials lie is because we allow them to: Clinton did it and people made excuses; Bush is doing it and people are making excuses; no wonder Kerry simply refuses to make up his mind. But I have no doubt that the precedent has been set, and Kerry or any president elected after him will feel comfortable lying because he'll/she'll know that a large enough portion of the population won't care because the lie SOUNDS good: it's what they want to hear. The message Americans are sending our leader is clear: the Truth be damned.

If we don't like our leaders, then we need to take a good hard look at ourselves, because in a republic, they represent US in more ways than one.

I don't know the answer either, but I agree that I'd definitely vote for truth and honor if I could find them. Well spoken, Caracal.
