As the host of the first annual Animation Weekend 2004, The Art Institute of Phoenix is proud to bring together animation enthusiasts with professionals and experts in the world of animation for a weekend full of workshops and special activities at the Phoenix Art Museum.

Animation Weekend 2004 will feature workshops and presentations from animation experts, a student demo reel review session, an After Hours
Mixer at the Phoenix Art Museum including the "Degas in Bronze" exhibit, insider views into the making of “Finding Nemo,” special
screenings of animated films, and much more. Animation legends Don Bluth and Gary Goldman will present a session on "The Art of Storyboarding." Pixar Director of Photography Sharon Calahan will
discuss "Successful Character Lighting," and her colleague Supervising Animator Dylan Brown will take us behind the scenes for "A Fish Story -
The Making of Finding Nemo.” A panel of industry professionals will conduct live critiques of animation demo reels from students and Barry
Munsterteiger from Apple Computer will share his experiences on "How to Get - and Keep - a Job in the Animation Industry." The two day event
will conclude with a Special Screening of "Finding Nemo" followed by an audience Q&A session with the Pixar filmmakers. Two day passes range from $35 to $125 and include a chance to win some fantastic raffle prizes such as software, art books and movie memorabilia.

-- ANIMATION WEEKEND 2004 is going to be a FANTASTIC event and you won't want to miss it! We'll be updating our website this week, but in the meantime I've included some additional information. Online registration begins on Friday, March 6th. One other thing you should know is that each registration for a two-day pass includes two FREE raffle tickets, and we are going to have unbelievable raffle prizes including software such as 3ds max 6, discreet combustion 3, cleaner XL, Final Cut Pro 4 for OS X, Shake 3 for OS X, and gorgeous art books like Expose I from Ballistic Publishing and The Art of Finding Nemo, and much more!

The Art of Storyboarding

Animation legends Don Bluth and Gary Goldman discuss the crucial first step in animation - storyboarding. Showing many examples from their animated films they demystify the storyboarding process. During this interactive presentation, the audience will learn to visualize a story in their minds and translate that vision to paper.

Breaking In: How to Get Noticed – and Maybe Get a Job – in the Animation Industry
Presented by Apple Motion Graphics Technical Director Barry Munsterteiger
Friday 4:30pm – 5:30pm

Apple Motion Graphics Technical Director Barry Munsterteiger discusses the importance of having both animation and people skills to break into the animation industry. Barry will provide some insider tips on the work ethic necessary to keep your clients and your boss happy.

Student Demo Reel Critique
A Panel of Industry Professionals will provide feedback on student animation demo reels.

Live critiques and feedback from industry professionals will follow Barry's presentation as they review student demo reels. Will they want to rewind and watch again... or hit the eject button? Open to current students only.

After Hours Mixer Reception
Friday 7:00pm – 9:00pm
The Phoenix Art Museum main floor
Animation Weekend attendees get a chance to relax and mingle while enjoying the Phoenix Art Museum “after hours” during a mixer reception that includes complimentary access to two great exhibits, American Beauty and Degas in Bronze.

A Fish Story – The Making of “Finding Nemo”
Presented by Pixar Animation Studios Supervising Animator Dylan Brown
Saturday 10am – Noon
The Phoenix Art Museum
Pixar Supervising Animator Dylan Brown leads us on a journey under the sea in the making of this computer animated ocean epic and explains why animating "Finding Nemo" was tougher than any of the previous films tackled.

Successful Character Lighting
Presented by Pixar Animation Studios Director of Photography
Sharon Calahan
Saturday 1:30pm – 4:30pm
The Phoenix Art Museum
In this non-technical session, Pixar Director of Photography Sharon Calahan discusses techniques for successfully lighting animated CG characters. The session discusses how to enhance the story visually by enhancing emotion and action readability while creating appealing characters.

Best Animated Feature “Finding Nemo”

Saturday 7:00pm – 10:00pm
Harkins Theatres (exact location to be announced)
See the highest grossing animated film in history on the big screen again, followed by an audience Q&A session with the filmmakers from Pixar.
