Warner Bros will be releasing "Happy Feet" nationwide in the US this coming Friday, November 17, 2006.
How do you think it will do on its opening weekend? Take part in the survey and venture a guess.

Some of us had a chance to see the ASIFA screening last week. I liked it a wish it well.
It's going up against Casino Royale, but , it has a secret weapon that even Q couldn't come up with: what I think is an exclusive "Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix" trailer (which we saw at the screening, so I'm assuming it will accompany the official release). We know that at least a few members of that fanbase will go for the trailer, and then stay for "Happy Feet". And need I say that's a big fanbase.

Yup. Plus it is a good movie...in my opinion. Don't put down a movie you haven't even seen.

I'm split on happy feet.
I love the director's past work..
..but everything i've seen so far looks bad. And I hate motion capture with a passion.
But If Animagus says it's good.. that's good enough for me.
..so, with the harry potter trailer, and Animagus's revue.. in consideration I'm thinking $15-23 million?

Saw a trailer of a young penguin tap dancing while it's face was dead as can be. Looked like an out-of-work dancer in a suit wearing a theme-park mask. Granted, beautifully lit and rendered, but didn't make me want to go and see it.
Who knows, maybe the movie is great. We'll see.

A few other things:
A friend who also was at the screening felt it dragged in places, but felt that the animation was great. Most of us feel that the films strength is in it's depiction of the arctic environments.
The Q&A with Mr. Miller was very cool, and entertaining. He mentioned that one of his favorite recent movies was "Finding Nemo". He is very familiar with Sydney, and said that he felt that they really nailed it, as far as recreating it in the movie.
He had advice for aspiring filmakers. The message was "just go and make a movie. Don't worry if you haven't been to film school. Just do it".(I know there's plenty of people here who are already doing just that). He got an early education in "cinema" by watching movies by peering over the fence at the drive-ins in Australia. He couldn't afford admission, so he ended up watching the movies without sound, which got him thinking visually.
Also, the trailers do not , I say again do not show you everything. There is an "element" to the story which occurs about half way in which is not just about penguins dancing and falling in love. I don't want to give anything away, but the ending is...O.K., I won't say anything else.
Just go see it, if nothing else to check out the work from Rythm and Hues and Animal Logic.

As much as I like Penguins, the trailers for this have not impressed me. I agree w/ those above that say they look too realistic (and a bit stiff) and that detracts from the character. However it does have some sense of appeal. And there certainly is a bit of a penguin craze going on right now so, I'll put my money on it doing as well as Over the Hedge. So $35,000,000ish.
I don't think most parents and children will be as critical as us animation-buffs, and after Halloween I think parents will be willing to let their children drag them into something that isn't 'scary'.

Well, it also depends on what style of animation you enjoy, and what type of a story plot. This one has a mix of comedy, the hero's journey, and art. It's not like the comedy seen in a lot of films today, such as "Over the Hedge." In the end, it's all up to the viewer. Everyone has their own opinion...

The movie may only come second to Casino Royale, which I plan on seeing tomorrow.
I may only see Happy Feet somewhere down the road, because it has Brittany Murphy. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

That's right. It beat Casino Royale. How about that!
The weekend box office top 3 according to www.boxofficemojo.com:
1. Happy Feet $42,320,000
2. Casino Royale $40,600,000
3. Borat $14,350,000
And no votes were cast in that range on the Poll although 1 person came close in the $45-50 category.
Congrats from AN to everyone involved with the movie.
Once again animation is #1.

Box Office Mojo confirms it. "Happy Feet"'s victory over "Casino Royale" was closer than originally reported. But Mssrs. Burns and Allen can assure Mr. Bond that close doesn't count for much. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif) Congrats to the makers of "Happy Feet".
