I was blown away recently at the achievements of some young fellers I took the time to help when they were interns and young staff members.
I was working for a comic book company in NY called "Defiant" in the early-mid 90's and I took the extra effort to spend time and validate the younger guys there who were hoping to make it in the arts.
I wasn't the only one in the office who took time but I'm glad I did. Then I get a Facebook page and here, 15 years later they're all tops in their fields!
One owns his own popular art studio, another is now the premier photographer and publisher of MMA ( mixed martial arts ) and UFC ( ultimate fighting championship ) and has just started a new magazine and got an exclusive contract with ESPN ( I'll be doing a martial arts comic for his magazine ). Another is now art director for Nickelodeon. Another is now a an editor at the Jimmy Kimmel Show. Another is a famous illustrator in comics and very popular in Italy. The one that really surprised me was when one of the other editors asked me if I remembered little "Matt". He was a tall drink of water but the youngest one on staff. I remembered him being bright and enthusiastic and very well mannered. Well lo and behold she tells me that little Matt went on to win an Emmy Award for writing some animation show.
I says, " What show is it? "
and she says a show called " Robot Chicken ".
Now I had only seen a few clips from Robot Chicken as I don't have cable but sure enough there was litte Matt Senreich standing along Seth Green and the staff with his Emmy Award!
So far two people from that comic book company have gotten Emmy Awards for their work and I reckon more will.
It's so nice to see that every kid in that company is now a top professional. I know I did my little bit by spending time with them and hope they pass on their skills to younger folks too.
