I was very sad to hear that Shirley passed away this week of a brain aneurism. Shirley did a lot of work in animation including Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm, Superman Animated Series, Spawn Animated Series, Batman Animated Series,Batman Beyond Animated Series and more.
She received several Emmy Award and nominations for animation icluding:
Batman Beyond (Winner) (2001) The Zeta Project (2001) New Batman / Superman Adventures (animated episodic TV) Adventures of Batman and Robin (1996) Batman Animated Series (syndicated TV- 84 ep.)
I met Shirley back in 1995 when I approached her to do the scoring for my short film, Prelude to Eden. What she delivered to me was beyond any of my expectations.
She was amazingly generous with her talent, time and expertise and always a consumate professional who enjoyed her work a great deal.
Shirley will be missed by many who were lucky enough to have known her.
Here's a little photo gallery of pictures from the Prelude to Eden recording session:

I forgot to mention that Shirley was a music composer. I don't think that was clear from my first post. I really wish we could edit our posts.

That's sad. It was a surprise, I assume. Her work was great, and it was a real treat to hear her music - both the superhero cartoon stuff. and the scores that were composed in other than a strictly Elfman style. Like Bartek, she was responsible for much of Elfman's final sound on a lot of films. Elfman's arrangers/orchestrators never get enough credit.

I'm seeing many great tributes to her across the 'Net. I've even written one of my own and posted it to my Blogger page.
She will be sorely missed. Sorely.

I first knew about Shirley through Prelude to Eden, and followed her work since she had cooperated with Danny Elfman on several scores and had a similar flair. She was an incredibly talented composer, and will be missed.

Shirley Walker to be overlooked at the Oscars
SoundtrackNet has learned that a pioneer in the film industry will be absent from this weekend's Oscars telecast. Shirley Walker, the first female film composer to score a solo studio project, passed away last November, but won't be recognized during the "In Memoriam" segment on Sunday evening.
She died on November 29, 2006 of complications from a stroke. Earlier that same month, composer Basil Poledouris died from cancer, and he will appear in the montage segment honoring those film industry professionals who have passed away in the past year. Sources in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences say that Walker's absence from the segment was a difficult decision - it's not that they forgot about her, but rather they had time considerations and after much wrangling, she didn't make the cut.

"Time considerations"? Well, someone has to take the fall for the lousy jokes and endless thank yous to CAA/Endeavor/Wm Morris-might as well be an obscure if pioneering dead film composer.
It was probably because her identifiability among TV viewers would have been near zero. And that's what the Academy Awards has become for many years now-a TV show first and foremost. The whole "honoring our own" thing runs a distant fifth place these days. I mean, Ellen DeGeneres? How many films has she made? "Mister Wrong". I think that's pretty much it(some will bring up Johnny Carson, but he was unique and anyway, Ellen is no Johnny). Chris Rock has way better movie provenance than she does. Poor Ms. Walker. She deserves better.

I loved Shirley Walker's score for Prelude to Eden, and I am sorry to hear of her passing. quote: I mean, Ellen DeGeneres? How many films has she made?
For what it's worth, I loved Ellen's vocal performance as Dory in Finding Nemo.

I completely forgot about 'Dory'. Well, okay--she'll get a pass for that one.

I didn't know Shirley Walker but I offer my condolences to friends and family.
[Not to distract from the topic of her passing, in response to Michel and others who've brought this up. The settings for the boards are cleared for message editing but for some reason they don't work. It's a glitch with the software that I haven't been able to figure out yet. I'll keep trying to resolve it. In the meantime, I apologize once more for the situation. If you need help with message editing let me or one of the staff know and it'll be taken care of.]
