Hey Folks,
I just completed the teaser animation for a short film proposal. This might be a bit too artsy fartsy for some folks, but it's something I've been interested in doing for a long time.
By the way, the animation was created straight ahead in Photoshop - frame by frame. Each frames is saved as a JPG. The JPG sequence is then brought in After FX and rendered into a Quicktime Movie with the accompanying soundtrack.
Check it out here:

This looks very nice. It reminds me of some of the abstract bits from the first "Fantasia".

That looks great! It's like the early EARLY animation on film strips. Good luck with it .

Very remniscent of Norman McLaren I've always been fond of his 'abstract' films, too; especially Begone Dull Care ..
Best wishes with the short film!

Beautiful work. That kind of stuff is more fun to watch than character animation. This example looks like Humorous Phases of Funny Faces meets TRON.

Michel, your efx animation is very much like jazz music anyways - this collaboration suits you perfectly!! Fantastic stuff! You are always pushing the art in new dynamic ways! You are very pioneer oriented and always exploring outside the box!! Keep on truckin'!!

great! i can def see the Oscar Fischinger and Norman McLaren influence, but there is a definate Gagne feel to it. I must say i have never been a fan of 'experimental' jazz but somehow watching this makes me like it. Hope the project goes well!

Actually, there've been a number of ocasions when I thought the shapes you use in your work would lend themselves very well for this approach of animation. So I can only join the crowd and be nothing but supportive about this! Cool!

Looks great! I saw it before I read this thread, and the first question I had was about the process. I wouldn't have guessed straight-ahead in Photoshop!
Good luck with the finished film. I'm sure it will be fantastic.

Thanks so much for all the support.
Since the financing for this film will come from the "art grant" avenue rather than the commercial side, it will allow me to explore without constraint, which is something I've always wanted to do.
A few years ago, I was delighted to hear that Disney was doing an abstract segment based on Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in Fantasia 2000. With all the resources at their disposal, I thought they could do something incredible. When I saw the film, I realized that the segment wasn't abstract at all. Shapes were turned into butterflies and bats (behaving very literally) and graphics such as water splash and ripples were introduced... so much for the abstract segment I was expecting.
For better or for worse, I'm committed to make a 100% abstract film. ![[cheers]](graemlins/cheers.gif)
