Now that I have your attention :}

Has anyone else seen this release from Studio Ghibli?(1994) I think it's a fantastic, well crafted and emotional film. granted, there are severe cultural devices sure to offend close minded people, but overall I think it's great.

I doubt that Disney would DARE attempt to get the release rights to this film :}

I saw PomPoko a while back and to this day it remains as one of my favorite Ghibli films.

I do agree though that there are many, many cultural things in that movie that won't fly here. PomPoko would probably be the hardest Ghibli film to sell to an American audiance.

Hypothetical Disney marketing meeting notes for POMPOKO...

Exec #1- Personally I see a huge market for giant raccoon balls. This is an untapped market. How many raccoons are out there saying to themselves, " Where are do my balls fit in this movie. My balls are being underserved. "
Remember giant fuzzy dice...
think raccoon balls.
"Raccoon balls the fuzzy dice of the new millennium!"
Exec #2- Yeah well put them on a skateboard and the kids well love it!
Exec #3- The skateboard is a great idea. But shouldn't the balls be wearing some kind of protection.
Exec #2- Yeah we'll put "knee-pads" on the balls.
Exec #1- O.K. So our product idea is, "fuzzy raccoon balls riding a skateboard with knee pads as an ornament for your rearview."
All Execs in attendance- "Yes!"
Exec #1- "O.K. Break!"

This is one of those films that I could understand unsubbed, undubbed, even though I can't speak a word of Japanese. This is a great film, but the tanuki-testicle jokes would make this impossible for Disney Execs to release.

This film, more than any, is the reason i was upset when Disney won the rights to Ghibli's distribution; it means I'll never get to see an american release of this film, outside of fan-subtitled versions. (Which are probably now illegal to distribute). =P

Get a multi-region DVD player, Madman are releasing Pom Poko in October. I heard from a friend that they got a Ghibli box set (at JBHifi for anyone in Aus) but I haven't been able to find a link for it online anywhere.

They're not racoons, they're tanuki's. A tanuki is sort of a racoon/badger that lives in Asia. I think the testes are supposed to represent the flakiness of a person who frequents restaurants and leaves with out paying. I'll look into that. The story was explained to my old boss who embarrassed the heck out of me by asking about that particular feature of the business rep of our host company in Japan.
