FYI - On Saturday June 26th, in Burbank, Asifa-Hollywood is hosting a 2-D EXPO.

I am one of the co-conspirators behind this event - and it's shaping up nicely. Basically it's a full day of panels discussing the current state of traditional (you know, hand drawn) animation. Confirmed panelists & guests include Eric Goldberg, Shane Glines, Raul Garcia, Mark Kausler, Mike Nguyen, Bert Klein, Tom Sito, Eddie Mort, Lili Chin, Jorge Gutuerrez, Craig Kellman, and Gabe Swarr.
Panels cover topics such as "2-D THE NEXT DIRECTION", "FLASH ANIMATION", "DOING IT YOURSELF", "DISTRIBUTION" and "NETWORK PROGRAMMING".

In the evening we are planning a sneak preview screening of a new 2-D feature (to be announced) and a program of recent UNSOLD PILOTS. There will be a networking area with a few exhibitors, including bookseller Stuart Ng, animators Stephen Silver and Bob Harper, The Animation Show and the Asifa booth which will take consignments, selling artists sketch books and art materials.

Someone should put a large print of Mr. Eisner(Mr 2D Death) on the wall near the panelists, so we have ref. to do caricatures all day. [Big Grin]

I'm looking forward to this! I'm flying in to LA from out of state today, so it should be fun. Hope to meet a few of you. It certainly looks like a great event (and you can't beat that price).

Aloha,

*Hopefully, I'll be able to drop by during the day, too! Those panels sound great, Jerry! -- SS!

Does the $30.00 non-member fee include the screenings that evening, or is there an additional $10.00 for that?

2D LIVES!EXPO ROCKED!
Got back just a bit ago,was sorry I could not stay for the whole event.I thought it was a GREAT success, attendance was good, and increased as the day wore on.I had a blast hanging out with fellow AN members Kevin O, Offbeat, Jasen, Eric Hedman and R Mills, and was delighted to see lots of old industry pals there, too! The panel discussions I was able to attend were most enjoyable and informative;and it was wonderful to see screenings independent projects as well as what's new in Flash TV production. All of it MOST inspiring.
The venue was perfect, everything was very well planned;all involved did a TERRIFIC job. I hope most sincerely that this becomes an annual event!

Thanks Im2dguy and Charles for talking me into going!

I had a blast! Everyone was supercool!

The lectures were worth the admission alone.

The Independant animations were excellent... Very inspiring, and reminded me of why I got into animation in the first place. For some reason, Digimon just doesn't have the same effect.

It was great meeting everyone, i'd say it was a big success.
[cheers]
I hope everyone in the EXPO did well. I couldn't take it all in, I was exhausted by the time I got to the 4th table. It should be a 2 day event.

Thanks to everyone who came by and said howdy. Thanks to Amid for putting me on the Flash Panel - it was a blast. Thanks to Jerry and ASIFA for the event. This was a great start to something I hope grows and becomes bigger. Look forward to next year and hope to be in a better position to help out with it.

There was a great positive vibe at the whole event. With the seeds planted, I can see this event maturing into something even bigger and better next year. But all in all, a great freshman effort. Kudos to Jerry, ASIFA and everybody else involved in putting it on.

I liked the fact that it was intimate. I'm looking foward to seeing this thing grow.

I also agree with Amid, it was a very impressive turn-out for being the first one. Amid... great job moderating the Flash board.. and thanks to everyone who participated in them.. everyone in all of the discussions. It was very informative.

I had no idea the Tenacious D video was done in Flash. Impressive!

It was great to see quite a few friendly faces and many new ones too. It was also nice to meet a few of you guys and put faces with the AN icons!

I couldnt stay for the afternoon talks, but the morning talks were great. Nice job moderating Amid- that was a good discussion packed into a pretty small timeslot.

Many of us working in Flash have a very positive outlook about the possibilities of the domestic TV animation industry.... its not there yet, but the animators I know are definitely excited because the domestic TV industry is really on the edge of much more work if things go well.... lets hope the studio execs are paying attention...

If you have the solid foundation of a good script and a tightly defined style, there is no reason why many animated TV shows cant be produced ENTIRELY here in the US. That may not work for all styles of animation, but it can for a very diverse group of shows. I thought the panel definitely showed that optimistic attitude.

Lets make next year even better and bigger.

Thanks to everyone who did this event.
It was good to catch up with
everyone from the AN, including:
ToonedBob, Eric, Bronnie, Rmills, Offbeat, and Strawberry!
The independent film section was quite inspiring.

The gist of the pitch section panel:
create characters that have appeal.
Create a character driven show,
and make those presented to want
to see more of that character.

Keep creating.

Good to see and pass notes to Bronnie, Rmills, Offbeat, Jasen and Im2Dguy. Good to see my lurker friends from the board as well. [Wink]

The panels were excellent.
Having Mr. Goldberg there was a godsend to me.
Next time there should be just a section with just him. Maybe with just him and a moderator.

It was amazing to see the independant stuff.
Mr. Capobiancos piece blew me away. It had a lot of warmth and appeal. I am hoping he finds the time with his family and job commitments to finish that up soon. I am dying to see how it will turn out. All the pieces were great to see....I had a chance to compliment Mr. Klauser on the effect of It's the Kat. He was very warm and personable. A gentleman and a scholar.

Everything worked out great....

And Lili Chin has an amazing voice/accent. WOW!!! [Big Grin]

Thanks Mr. Beck et al. This was pretty fantastic. [Big Grin]
Next time will be even better. Although, except with the addition of the Goldberg brain drain (with him in a smoking jacket in a leather over stuffed chair) I don't now how yet. [Big Grin]

Marvelous event! For you AN folks, I was the dingaling behind registration without a baseball cap.

Judith Tamkin Fashion Center
Judith Famkin Tashion Center
Fudith Jamkin Tampon Center.

You can be sure I was muttering that in my sleep all last night...

All in all, quite successful. ASIFA made sufficient funds to cover expenses, which is pretty much the most one can hope for with such events. We picked up 15 memberships, and would have had 16 if Bronnie had brought a second check. [Big Grin]

If we'd advertised it a bit better in things like free weekly papers, I think it would have been a smash. As it was, it was a wonderful Saturday and I look forward to trying it again next year.

Three cheers for Jerry Beck!

Ditto what everyone else has said. Excellent, inspiring, informative, and grassroots useful. It was such a great event that even sitting most of the day on the most uncomfortable chairs ever designed couldn't drive me away. Thanks Jerry and ASIFA, and next year we'll make sure The Pegboard has a big ad for it.

I had a great time. I told Jim Capobianco about it just a week before and after a few emails with Jerry he was ready to commit to going, though I knew he was still uncertain about what to expect. In the end it was more than he could ask for. Thank you all for such a warm reception to "Leonardo." We hope to finish it in the coming months and hope to screen it to whole lot of you!

Hats off to Jerry, Amid, Antran, Tom and all those behind the scenes. You all did a great thing this past Saturday.

I can only wish to see more of these and meet more of the rest of you.

Ronnie
