The cops are a little rambunctious at this one. They were pretty foul at the Democratic convention, but they're pushing it farther this week:

Here's some nice video of our polite friends in blue arresting a giant monster terrorist.

DEMOCRACY NOW is live on LINK TV, with first-hand accounts of this illegal intimidation of the press. It's engaging, scary TV. Rerun is at 2 PM EST, and the show will be on the web at Democracynow.org later today.

I wish you guys would keep this in mind, that AnimationNation.com is first and foremost an industry forum. We're about animation. We were that way for over 2 1/2 years, up until September 11, 2001, when we opened up the forums to a wider range of topics that weren't industry centric, such as politics, the war of terror, etc.

In the first year when we opened the Side Topics Forum, when we were discussing the 2004 presidential election, like we are now in 2008, and we had a difficult time with members getting so emotionally involved that they actually became hostile and started trolling other forums and organizing malicious email campaigns. Remember that Gary?

Actually, Brian Reynolds recommended that we do not open AN to political discussions, but I decided to go with it to gauge the political sentiments of the animation community. It was never done before, here was an opportunity to see how animation artists thought, what made them tick, which way the community would lean in regard not only to politics, but in a variety of other subjects as well.

If we had to do it over again, I would've probably listened to Brian's advice. I don't think it's worth it anymore when folks here get caught up in a non-animation subject and wind up getting angry at each other or harboring bad feelings.

The criteria established from the beginning was and is, to quote Brian, "use your common sense". I saw AN as a place where we could talk about issues as charged as politics with professionalism and consideration. Whether or not that's possible from here on out, I don't know. Whether it was possible at all, I don't know.

All I'm asking, is to reel in your emotions, keep things professional, and use your common sense. If that's asking too much, and it probably is, we can close off all politically oriented discourse once and for all and focus on animation centric topics exclusively like we used to, with Side Topics as a place for fun stuff that won't set members at each other. Thanks for your consideration everyone.

My very first couple of posts here were back in 2000.. when I posted as 'offbeat' my account was closed because the mod didn't like when I used my 1st amendment rights.. I hope he doesn't hold real power anywhere else in life.

But they were about how more and more 2d jobs were being sent overseas without penalty or encouragement to stay here by our government.

and how that the jobs that are here.. the companies get more for their money by making everyone work overtime without paying overtime.

and how cg animation wasn't the future for animators everyone thinks.. cause their jobs will be outsourced as quick as 2d jobs.

In fact now I predicted even more CG will be produced to countries that don't have laws that protect program licenses. I've heard so many stories of full studios overseas that have one copy of maya.. it's a cliche.

If I ran an animation studio here.. and had to shell out thousands of dollars every time these programs come out with another version for every seat in the studio.. i'd consider India or China too.

...So, nothing much has changed since then, and everything happened as I predicted.

I realize now that most of my complaining stems from following a foolish childhood dream, and a HUGE disappointment of this industry (perhaps life)

I just relate to that Billie Joel Song "Allentown" I come from a city, and state that was obliterated by outsourcing.. so my anger was focused went into government. I see the middle class of our country and our industry being 'phased out' America is becoming a country of 'management.' I was just complaining about those in charge of doing it.

That was my path from animation to regular watercooler talk.

I guess I post here now from habit. I'm too disappointed by this industry to talk about it.

And then I've heard of a couple of stories of outspoken AN members being blacklisted or losing their jobs for what they've said here.. and that "they" are watching.

I'm trying to get off the numerous lists i'm sure i'm on!
[cheers]

But if you want everyone to keep quiet about politics.. i'm sure the government would appreciate it.

Let's get something straight Gary. First, you don't have any 1st amendment rights on this board. Secondly, you go out of your way to be offensive to religion, the military, businesses, etc. You may think you are being funny and possess an in ordinate amount of wit but you come across as an offensive bore.

Wait a minute. In Gary's defense there are plenty of other people who lean the other way on issues that are just as insulting to values others hold. I don't get why Gary is singled out. Thomas (aka The Mod?) has insulted others beliefs, called names, posted ridiculous images, exaggerated and blown things out of proportion too. Gary doesn't like religion at is so offensive but when others don't like Liberals or socialism and don't hold back any insult it's okay? Sometimes I don't agree with Gary but he makes me laugh, makes me think and I look forward to his posts. I think people should lighten up and enjoy the wonderful fact that we can exchange ideas in our country and we all can learn from each other (or not) but allow ALL points of view to flourish. Why just freedom of speech that you like, isn't that a really boring way to go through life - without being challenged?

Just my 2 cents - I don't mean any disrespect to Charles and know he (and the others who run AN) have a hell of a time with complaints and such.

Charles,

From a long time member , who seldom participates here anymore , but still checks in out of habit :

I support Brian Reynold's position (and yours now apparently) on keeping this forum focused on discussion of Animation and Animation Industry topics.

There are plenty of other forums and blogs for people to go sound off on their religious or anti-religious opinions or their political leanings. No one's speech is being suppressed . IF they like to talk about those things then they should go find a forum[s] devoted to those topics. This is Animation Nation.

I think the forum would be stronger by focusing discussion on Animation related topics. I'd be much more inclined to participate regularly if the AN forum was re-focused in that direction.

I belong to numerous internet forums , some of which discuss religion and/or politics. I also belong to some special-interest forums , such as one that is a woodworking forum focused on building or collecting Arts & Crafts style furniture. I'd be upset if someone came on to the Arts & Crafts forum and suddenly started diverting attention from the main topic to spout off on why they hate God or hate Christians (or hate Jews or Moslems, or whoever else it is they hate) and why this or that politician is a jerk , etc. It's not that I think they don't have a right to discuss those topics, but that's not the topic that the forum was created to discuss.

Ok.. my bad. I didn't know that.
I apologize entirely.

If I'd known that, i'd never sign up.. this is awkward.

Kinda like walking into a bar... and chatting with a woman with broad shoulders for 2 hours... before realizing it's a gay bar.

Sorry to have crashed your party!

Well, being part of AN myself I think we all have 1rst amendment rights. So I disagree with the Mod.

But it is a private board and you also have the right to have your posts deleted or membership revoked...but until then you have the right to say what you want.

Offbeat is not a bore.He has many intelligent points to back his arguments. I may disagree with some tactics but thats the kettle calling the pot black.

I think without our diverse and unique expressions we are not AN.

I don't think theres anything wrong with people getting pissed off over opinions. thats natural.

this forum has been so much for the industry. I personally like the fact that we talk about more than just animation. the nature of this site and the reform it promotes is very political so its natural for conversation to bleed into other political issues.

the problem is with the babies who cry to the mod and Charles. Not people like Offbeat(although he could chill on certain issues that won't ever be resolved with insults).

The real problem, as it always has been, is the pussies who can't take other peoples opinions and need to complain to the parent instead of just dealing with the person they have a beef with.

If the Mod and Charles did not have to deal with emails in regards to peoples personal feelings about whats being said on this board then this wouldn't be an issue.

I get why the Mod and Charles get tired of playing baby sitter....so why don't you all just stop acting like babies and deal with the fact that people have a way different opinion of things.

Hey, we have to deal with you.

I for one would not like to see a voice like Offbeats silenced. I personally don't see where he gets the energy to post so much and rail into people so much, but I see and agree with much of what he says. I'm sure others do to but are smart enough to stay out of the line of fire of people who can't take it.

BUT, and thats a big one, this board belongs to someone and at the end of the day he has the ultimate right to delete yo ass.

Hmmmm....this is all cryptic.
First time reading this thread; mod introduces political discussion and Gary Clair's explaining himself?
Sorry, I think politics has alot to do with "the industry" as well as it influences everything socially and politically whether I like it or not. Indpendantly especially, animation can be about making statements.I think Gary eloquently drew the connection between the animation industry and politics when he talked about outsourcing. While it is a good idea to stay away from the topic in mixed company, quashing it scares me more. I like Gary/offbeat. He's funny. I don't agree with alot of what many say here whether politics or movie crit but there are places I always overlap and agree and find common ground.
My personal rule about emailing and forums is the same one I have when driving (to avoid road rage): I don't type (say) anything that I wouldn't and couldn't say to one's face. It's worked for me. The couple times I have said something provocative they knew I must be serious because I rarely do.
I think if more people wrote as if they were face to face it'd be possible to have any discussion.
