I usually wait until the regular season's over and the playoffs start before getting AN's annual Major League Baseball Championship thread going, but this year's been an exceptional season and warrants getting started a few days early.
This has been the most exciting season in recent history for baseball in the US. In the National League, with 3 divisions and a wild card berth, with 3 games left, we still don't know who's going to the playoffs. It's a virtual dead heat across the board between several teams. Among them the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Colorado Rockies, San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks.
With 3 games left to the regular season, nothing in the National League has been determined yet pending the results of the games played this weekend.
In the American League, the Cleveland Indians will be there, as with the Anaheim (LA) Angels, but with the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, it's not known who'll win their division and who'll be the wild card team.
Lots of action for baseball fans!

Some things were accomplished in this evening's games.
Congrats to the Boston Red Sox fans, as their team won the American League Eastern Division breaking the Yankees' long time hold on that title. Yanks will be the American League wild card team in the playoffs.
Congrats to the Chicago Cubs as they clinched the National League Central Division title. Hooray!
The Arizona Diamondbacks are also guaranteed a playoff spot after their win tonight, still waiting to see as to whether they'll be champs of the NL Western Division or wild card.

What an exciting season in baseball this year!
The Phillies and the Mets are tied for 1st place in the NL East with 1 game left to the regular season.
The DBacks clinched the NL West title with San Diego's loss today.
That leaves the Eastern Division and the Wild Card to be decided on the very last day!

The excitement of this year's amazing baseball season continues, as the Philadelphia Phillies came from 7 games behind the Mets with 17 games left to play to clinch the NL Eastern Division Title on the last day of the season.
On top of that, the San Diego Padres and the Colorado Rockies will be playing a one game playoff to determine who will be the Wild Card team.
If this is any indication of what we can expect in October, then the post season should be a memorable one as well and something to look forward to with anticipation.

What an incredible Rockies/Padres game... Did he touch the plate?
Makes you wonder if Baseball needs Instant Replay.. I'm not a big fan of instant replay in baseball, but getting the call right is number 1.. I can think of half a dozen plays in history that would probably be overturned by instant replay.. and half a dozen plays where the umpires get together to get the calls right.
Rockies vs Phillies in the NLDS.

What a game! The NL Wild Card playoff between the Padres and the Rockies went into extra innings. The Rockies were down by 2 in the bottom of the 13th when they rallied and scored 3 runs to win in a very controversial play at the plate. What's done is done. The lineups are set for the postseason which will begin tomorrow.
Round 1
American League --------------- Angels vs. Red Sox Yankees vs. Indians
National League --------------- Cubs vs. Diamondbacks Rockies vs. Phillies
I anticipate a very competitive series across the board. There can only be one, and I'm rootin for the team that hasn't won a championship since 1908 with no particular expectations.

A friend who closely follows baseball speculates that a big reason for this very competitive season is that steroids and other performance enhancing drugs are being weeded out of the system. Players are returning to natural physical conditions which makes it better for everyone. This year was the highest attendance level in baseball's history, the 4th year in a row that attendance for the major leagues has increased. Very good news for America's pastime.

When the postseason comes around, the great teams step up and the desire to win becomes all the more prevalent.
Also in the National League...
The Rockies lead the Phillies 2 games to 0. The DBacks lead the Cubs 2 games to 0.
At this point in the first round it's one sided in each series. The competitive regular season hasn't quite carried over yet.

It looked like each division series was going to end up in a sweep until the Yankees pulled one out against Cleveland. The Indians are up 2 games to 1. Boston moves on after sweeping the Angels.

I figure that Colorado will represent the National League, and the Boston/Cleveland survivor will be favored in the Series. Indian starters will make the ALCS a lot closer than people think, yet Boston's third and fourth starters should make a difference in a seven game series. The Colorado shortstop, Tulowitski, is outstanding.

Boston is looking like a team of destiny at this point, slamming Cleveland 10-3 for a 1 game lead in the American League Championship best of 7.
And so is Colorado, beating the DBacks 3-2 in 11 innings for a 2 game to none lead in the NLCS.

So I'm going to sound like a dick for saying this but Baseball is perishing from the earth. Most people live in a concrete world now designed for cars most of the time.
Deal with it, get a skateboard or something better and do what you can to creatively destroy it or make it better. Baseball, yeah, "Pastime" is an apt way to say it.
Fields aren't natural to cities anymore. The real estate is worth too much. But, a 10 stair handrail is another story.

Sorry you feel that way. Start a blog, post a link to your blog on your account here, write whatever you want on your blog, build a like minded community. This ain't the place for ceaseless negativity.
In the LA area there's several baseball leagues that people who like to play can join.
The Victory Adult Baseball League plays games at different fields in the San Fernando Valley area. The league playoffs end up with the championship game at Dodger Stadium.
http://www.vabl.org/
The Pacific Coast Baseball League has a wider range of play throughout the area.
http://www.pcbl.org
The Mens Senior Baseball League is throughout the US.
http://www.msblnational.com/main.aspx
These are leagues for people who like to play fast pitch hardball. They all have several divisions including one for players over 35 years of age. Baseball is everywhere and its growing internationally. This year in the US as I stated at the beginning of the thread, it's the 4th year in a row of record breaking attendance in the US major leagues. American Baseball ain't gonna go away any time soon.

Don't forget about a cool inner city game that is played in that concrete world.. its called "Stickball". Been around for a long long time.. Baseball isn't going anywhere. I'll carry my bat and glove while I ride my skateboard to the next game anytime.

Looks like the ALCS is gonna go six or seven, while the Rockies look like Destiny's child in the National. I'd pull for the tribe if they get to the Series, while if the Sox played Colorado, I'd pull for the Rockies. No hate against Boston, but they won the whole thing a couple of years ago, while Cleveland is starving for a pennant and the Rockies are just plain fun to watch, even if they beat out my beloved Dodgers for the wild card. Or more accurately, my Dodgers folded up like a cheap tent.
If you don't like baseball, that's cool, but no need to write in and bash it.

Cleveland sent a strong message to the Red Sox last night with a 13-6 victory in 11 innings, evening the series at a game each.
Interesting how the American League has 2 old time long established teams going at it while the National League has 2 of the newer teams facing each other.

There are all kinds of interesting matchups.. and possible matchups for the world series. Red Sox have JD Drew, who has a brother on the Diamondbacks, Stephen Drew. Kaz Matsui of the Rockies came from the same Japanese team that Daisuke Matsuzaka played on. Last night, Trot Nixon got a clutch hit for the Indians, against his only former team, the Red Sox. Tonight Livan Hernandez starts for the D-backs.. he's a former World Series MVP when he was with the Marlins.. Josh Becket was a World Series MVP for the Marlins also.. ofcourse his mvp came with the Marlins second championship. Tulowitzki, who is on the Rockies, looks to be the national league rookie of the year. Dustin Pedroia could be rookie of the year in the American League for the Red Sox... phew.. Lots of great players on all the teams left.. very interesting! ![[Yes]](graemlins/yes.gif)
