Well, unlike the moon, Mars has a vast amount of water ice and some dry ice(frozen carbon dioxide). So the ultimate would be to see if you could set off some sort of process to create an artificial greenhouse effect.
Outside of that possibility(if it's even a possibility) there's all sorts of interesting experiments that could be done, and of course biological exploration, because you never know what's possible, and where life may survive.
If there is life on Mars, even the most simple form of life, it tremendously increases the probability that there's more life out there in the depths of space.

Mars? We're nothing as a species and country until we set foot on the Sun. He who controls Sol controls our solar system - we need a freakin Sun Base!

Take also into account what new discoveries in physics that will take place during this project. Half way through it some guy could come up with a new propulsion system or anti gravitic property or way to make bones and muscle not atrophy in zero G.
The computing power by that time will be off our scale and problems hitherto unresolvable will be done in micro second.
If mankind can prevent themselves from chimping up we'll see a whole new world. ( don't sing the Disney song here ).
However, knowing mankind, someone somewhere will find some menace, some scapegoat, and some bs excuse to not explore space nor make peace.

To go along with what Thomas said about the military. Theres an article in todays USA Today Newspaper that talks about the Space race to get to the Moon and how it was started by Sputnik and Our fear of them using any space advantage to attack us. Maybe we need Iran to send up a modern Sputnik to get another race going?

Paburrows, that's true! Sputnik was a terrifying motivator for the space race. America was sitting on it's ass watching tv and drinking beer and complaining about black people for everything when the Soviets lit a fire under them. Suddenly it was everything space because the same drunk, delusional fools realized the Soviets had their stolen ex-Nazi scientists too.
People built bomb shelters when Sputnik was announced, duck and cover was still used in schools I was in til the late 1960's.
See, without a fire under it, an ass will sit there and bake in the Sun's light til biscuits appear.
We have far too much dope in this country and it gets people narcoleptic until the shpit hits the fan ( yes shpit ).
