There was a time in history when some guys took on the big companies, got sued, got in trouble, got sued again, got in more trouble but made freakin' radical history.
I'd met Bobby London, creator of Dirty Duck at the Rockin Comic Con and it brought back memories of the days when cartoonists took on the government during the radical 60's and 70's. When cartoonists really grew a pair and didn't give a "F".
The Air Pirates is a story worthy of feature film. It would be great.
So in reflection, we get radical on AN but we're not the first. It's wise to see how those that came before us got radical even when they broke the law, tore their asses, and are still kickin' it.

The way I heard the story: The AIR PIRATES really didn't have a defense, but Disney gave them every opportunity to yield gracefully with relatively slight penalties. The Pirates didn't take advantage of that, and finally got smacked down. Not smart, but interesting.

I have read about this in Cartoonist Profiles and old Comic Scene. To me it just seems more than fool hearty but plain stupid on the part of the cartoonists. The characters were more than similar, they were the Disney characters. Sometimes when ya "stick it to da man", ya better make sure you have the right "man".

When I last saw Dan O’Neill it was at his San Francisco night club in North Beach. I liked Dan but he seemed like a throwback from another time. The Hippies were long gone, and “The Man” was firmly in charge.
While I admire Dan and the guys for having the guts to take on “The Evil Empire,” it was in the end a pretty dumb thing to do. If you’re gonna wage war on the Death Star, you’d better damn well sure have Luke Skywalker on your side.
Bobby London is still a good friend, and I’ve admiration for all the Air Pirates team. However, the Hippies lost the war and “The Man” still runs the game. Take him on at your own risk.

But the whole thing seems like tilting at windmills. They could have attacked a better representative of the establishment back then.
