I was devastated to learn today from his brother Lou Small Jr. that Serge Michaels had passed away recently.
I'd only met him in passing but had been an admirer of his work for years. Three decades of fine art in the animation industry and art is a part of his family legacy as his brother is also a well known artist in comics and fine art.
I'm a fanatic about background artwork and Serge's work from The Little Mermaid on through Lion King and especially my all time favorite, Pocahontas, just blew me out of the water.
So condolences to his friends, family, fans, co-workers.

Serge was a great guy!! I, too, was saddened to learn of his passing. May he rest in peace.
To quote Billy Joel... ...it seems that "only the good die young"!

I was shocked to hear of his passing. Serge seemed like a kid, and had his whole life ahead of him. This is very sad news.

While I am not that familiar with the artist, obviously I have seen his work, and so I still feel a great sense of loss. My condolences.

I just got back from helping Serge's brother and sister move the last of his stuff out of his condo. It was like the end of an age and the beginning of a new one.
It was heartbreaking getting the full story and I have to say Serge has a wonderful family and great friends who came by to help them out.
Had my own wake up call when I was helping his sister and cousin move stuff out and was offering to carry this big box I thought was candy she was holding and it turned out to be Serge's ashes. That shook me up, however I felt like his spirit was there because while we were cleaning up I saw a book I hadn't seen before that just happened to be lying around on the floor. It was a Don Bluth book about storyboarding. Kinda felt like he was telling us something.
