With all due respect to Mr. Don Oriolo (and more so to his father, animator Joe Oriolo who purchased the rights to the Felix character and made new Felix cartoons in the 1960's) the title "the man behind Felix the Cat" belongs to Otto Messmer .

Messmer created Felix for his boss Pat Sullivan . Technically the character was owned by Pat Sullivan , but it is common knowledge that the character was created, designed, and directed by Messmer, not Pat Sullivan. Sullivan was the studio owner , Messmer was the creative force behind the Sullivan studio cartoons.
Many years later former Fleischer animator Joe Oriolo went into business with Pat Sullivan's nephew who now owned the rights to the Felix character. Oriolo produced a TV series starring a revamped Felix the Cat . At some point later on Oriolo became the owner of the Felix character .
