Its puppet capture.
2 hours as the premiere Monday morning at 9 on KCET....
lesser showings in other markets.
Basically its a science show for preschoolers done with Jim Henson Co. Puppeteers and Character Body Performers.
Its the best use for motion capture technology I have seen because as puppeteers they are already creating caricatured performances for their characters.
In this case though they are taking it to the next level...not trying to create something that could easily done with live actors and buckets of cash.
This is shot like a 3 camera tV show...then the edits are made, and the mocap and props are cleaned up, lit rendered popped back into the edit and voila!
There are drawn and cutout animated sequences through out as well..... and a new song that the teacher sings to match the episodes theme.
This thing is gonna win an emmy so you are gonna find out about it eventually anyway...might as well know about it now.

i had the opportunity to work on the drawn animated segments that you mention, eric, but i had to pass on the offer. however, i lent a hand to bunko who is doing (some? all?) of the drawn animated segments. they needed a hand and i was able to get them one segment done. really loose and fun style. it was a fun project and the folks at bunko are great people.
i was shown a clip of the show then. i have nothing against mocap, but there's something a little off when realistic movement is applied to a cartoony design. its a little jarring to me. maybe because i can't separate the process and the final product in my head?
still, it looks like a great show. hope it does well!

I don't know how one can legally restrict "....the Science..."
Maybe Mdme Curie should come back from the Dead and sue Bill Nye then.... .
Good Show G. That stuff is all fun. It reminds be of the interweaving of different media like on BettleGeuse and PeeWees Play House.
As far as the disconnectedness....its kinda funny. I have always felt that this would be the only really good use for MoCap, other than effects.
So I am happy to see pantomime actors and puppeteers working together. Its Puppetry. The same way they did on Labyrinth or Dark Crystal....only the technology has advanced.
The serious issue with MoCap is that when you add someone like an A Grade actor, or a B Grade actor(more usually) they start acting different. Slow Motion and smooth....Laxative motion..... But if you were to put Olivier or Vincent Price into one of these things and just tell them to do their thing, because of their training they would be able to do it. Because they use their body like an instrument and not like some wild emotive device.
