Word on the street is that Cartoon Network is not renewing any of their shows.. and then they are planning on doing a major corporate revamp.
Meaning they won't have any art jobs for 2-3 years.

Can anyone confirm/deny this??

Cartoon Network should sponsor an Animation Nation animated network for radical cartoonists! Then they would make some serious loot!

If this is true, then I guess things weren't animation-y enough for them. [puke]

I had lunch with a friend that works on a new show called Flapjack right before Comic-Con. He told me that most of the current shows on the air are running to their end. Stuff like Fosters, 3000, Lazlo and some others. Unfortunatly though most of the new and upcoming stuff is going though development hell though. I remember him taking me through the studio last November and showing me a board about 5 or 6 new shows and aparently just Flapjack and Chowder are the only ones still around. But I guess there might be other possibilities.

I have now idea on how that translates to jobs openings though. I do know that WB is looking for a bunch of people for their direct to video PG-13 line (Superman: Doomsday, New Frontier) on their hotline. But you need to have worked on an action show already.

This CAN'T be true! I have friend who is a producer at CN and she's been developing her own show and promoting the heck out of it. I hope this news doesn't put a ding in her plans.
I think it's time for a call to support a friend.

She was so close! So very CLOSE!

They appear to be going the way of MTV, which now specializes in everything EXCEPT music. [guitar]

As to wiether or not its shutting down I have no idea, I do know as I mentioned that they are working on Flapjack and Chowder. I also know that they are working on Transformers Animated. But this is actually how its always been with any animated project, some get made, some go for awile and then get killed and others take a long time but eventually do get made. I would assume that its not.?

Any more on this?
Seems kind of silly to not continue to produce new cartoon content.

Unless, the new direction thinks wacky live-action sitecoms are the new cartoons.

If that is the case then it makes complete sense for the Cartoon Network to no longer produce new cartoons.

While it would be surprising if the new powers-that-is at CN refer to "sitcoms" as "sitecoms"....

that was a typo. A typo that almost looks like some dumb word that might actually be used by someone. Perhaps a monkey?

Nah. You know and I know that that stable of cartoon characters are mostly based on people, not animals and what have you.

So, it would likely be a live action "Powerpuff Girl's High School Musical"

A couple of higher-ups say it ain't so

According to the Guild's blog this evening, after some asking around, apparently there might be changes in the wind, a la new Live Action shows on/at CN, but animation productions are still in the pipeline.

Of course, don't take my summary as being the end-all.It so certainly ain't. You may as well read the blog post to see what was said.

This is old, but very pertinant to this and the WB topic from the Union blog.

http://animationguildblog.blogspot.com/2007/09/cartoon-network.html

At the membership meeting last night, a member asked about "Cartoon Network shutting down."

The info came from a participant at Animation Nation who wrote:

Word on the street is that Cartoon Network is not renewing any of their shows, and then they are planning on doing a major corporate revamp. Meaning they won't have any art jobs for 2-3 years.

There was an added request for confirmation of this scuttlebutt.

So your intrepid reporter commenced rooting about at CN and came up with these observations from two CN mucky mucks:

"Steve, I've been here for a bunch of years now, and the first thing I heard when I arrived was that Time-Warner couldn't have two animation divisions, that we were going to merge with Warner Bros. Animation. We're still here. It's true that the division is being retooled and reworked. We haven't been doing well in the ratings, like we're a distant third after the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. But we've got several different series going, Out of Jimmy's Head, Foster's , Chowder, Flapjack, Transformers, Ben 10 and some new series in development. But no question that we're going through changes..."

"...The new head of the division is doing analyses of what kinds of shows we'll be doing, seeing if we'll do more live action, since the Disney Channel is being real succesful with their live action shows and movies. But we're still in the cartoon business..."

An artist upstairs who works on Fosters says they're going on hiatus for two months but will be back for a new season of the show. And Chowder, not yet aired, has been picked up for a new half season (six additional episodes).

Now. It could be that execs are blowing smoke up my hindquarters. Wouldn't be the first time. And it could be that the people I've talked to haven't been clued to the whole story of what's really going on at CN.

But as of right now, I would have to say that the studio isn't going anywhere, although it's going through some wrenching changes. Naturally, I could be wrong.
